Men's Soccer Picks Up First Win, 3-2, Over McMurry

The Webster University men's soccer team won its first game of 2016 with a 3-2 win over McMurry University (TX) on September 3 at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks scored a goal late in the first half, then added a needed pair of insurance goals in the second before nipping the War Hawks

Zach Gyuricza (SO, Chicago, IL/St. Viator) gave Webster a 1-0 lead at the 39:31 mark of the first half.  Gyurica was the Gorloks' leading scorer in 2015 with nine goals.  Alex Whalen (JR, St. Louis, MO/Parkway Central) assisted on the goal.  The Gorloks were outshot, 6-5, in the first half as freshman keeper Eli Smith (Orlando, FL/Dr. Phillips) came up with four saves.

After fairly even play in the first half, despite being outshot in the second half, Webster dominated in the period.  Brendan Shields (SR, St. Peter's, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East) put Webster up by two goals with a tally at the 53:32 mark of the second half.  Shield's goal was assisted by newcomer Juan Garcia, a freshman from St. Charles, MO (Duchesne).

Angel Jasso (SR, Kileen, TX/Shoemaker) made it 3-0 with a goal at 71:18  Frank Verdu (SR, Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) got the assist.  That goal would turn out to be the game winner.  The War Hawks answered with a goal of their own 29 seconds later to cut the lead to 3-1.  McMurry made it a little more exciting when it scored on a bomb from 30 yards out, just under the cross bar for the 3-2 final.

McMurry outshot Webster 19-12 for the game.  Smith wound up with six saves as he picked up the first win of his collegiate career.

Webster evened its record at 1-1 on the season.  The Gorloks travel to Memphis, TN, on September 10-11 to face host Rhodes College and Hendrix College (AR).
