Lynx Nip Gorloks, 2-1

The Webster University men's soccer team lost the first of two games in Memphis, TN, falling to host Rhodes College, 2-1 on September 10.  The Gorloks made a late surge for a tying goal, but couldn't reach the nets in the game's final minutes.

Rhodes took a 1-0 lead on a goal at 22:23 which turned out to be the only score of the first half.  The Lynx outshot the Gorloks, 10-1, in the half with Webster goalie Alex Bergmann (SO, Wentzville, MO/St. Dominic) making four saves.

The Gorloks came out stronger in the second half and a goal by Alex Whalen (JR, St. Louis,MO/Parkway Central), off a header, tied the game at 1-1 at 53:48.  The goal was assisted by Brendan Shields (SR, St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East).  The tie score was short-lived as the Lynx came right back to take the lead at 54:44 off a corner kick.

Webster put the pressure on in the games final minutes.  Zach Gyrurica (SO, Chicago, IL/St. Viator) had a shot over the crossbar at 86:57.  Juan Garcia (FR, St. Charels, MO/Duchesne) had a corner kick at 87:15 but the Gorloks couldn't get a shot off.  Zach Judis (FR, New Albany, OH/New Albany) had a shot attempt blocked at 88:19.  Frank Verdu (SR, Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) was able to get off a shot the Lynx keeper made a save on, off a corner kick by Dino Music (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville), at 88:33.

Bergmann wound up facing 18 shots and made seven games in the game, as he took the loss for Webster.

The Gorloks are 1-2 on the young season.  Webster defeated McMurry University, 3-2, last weekend after a loss in its opener to #24 ranked Wash U.

The Gorloks complete their trip to Memphis with a game vs. Hendrix College (AR) on September 11.  Webster starts a three-game homestand on September 14 at the Soccer Park when it faces Illinois College.
