Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Niel DeVasto Sports Information Director

#16 Ranked Luther Clips Webster, 3-2

The Webster University men's soccer team met up with Luther College (IA) in a driving rain, and came away with a 3-2 loss, on September 16 at the Soccer Park.  The Norse, ranked #16 in the NCAA III, didn't let the wet field conditions slow down their fast-paced attack, as a late pair of Gorlok goals had them come up just short.

The game started in a driving rain that continued throughout the evening but never resulted in any delays in the action.  The Norse had a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half as they took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.  The Norse broke through with a goal at 38:30 off a chip into the box that was directed by Webster goalie Eli Smith (FR, Orlando, FL/Dr. Phillips).

Luther seemed to break open the game with a quick pair of goals at 57:41 and 58:57 in the second half to make it 3-0.

But Webster got on the board when Zach Gyuricza (SO, Chicago, IL/St. Viator) carried a ball into the Luther penalty box, and passed to Joey Florian (SR, Ballwin, MO/John F. Kennedy) who's shot was deflected by the Norse goalie.  Gyuricza banged in the rebound for his second goal of the year, at 66:46, making it 3-1.

Gyuricza made it interesting when his second unassisted goal, at 88:40, cut the deficit to 3-2.  Gyuricza corraled a deflection by a Norse defender outside the right corner of the Luther goalie box and shot it in for his third goal of the season.  Gyuricza had one last chance with seconds remaining on a through ball, but the Norse goalie grabbed before he could get off a shot.

Luther wound up with a 26-5 advantage in shots for the game.  Smith had six saves in the contest as his record fell to 1-2 on the season.

Webster is 2-4 on the year.  Luther improves to 4-0-2.  The Gorloks will host the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on September 18 at 1:00 p.m. at the Soccer Park.
