Gorloks Put Down Panthers, 2-0, Start SLIAC 1-0

The Webster University men's soccer team got a dominant performance on the road in its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, beating Greenville College 2-0 on September 24.  Kyle Hertel got his first win and shutout in goal as Joey Florian and Alex Whalen tallied goals for the Gorloks.

Similar to the women's game that preceded the contest, the men dominated in the first half of play, but entered the locker room tied at 0-0.  Florian (SR, Ballwin, MO/John F. Kenney) changed that in a hurry with a goal a minute and a half into the second, when he scored his second goal of the season at 46:36.  Zach Gyuricka (SO, Chicago, IL/St. Viator) assisted on the goal.

Whalen (JR, St. Louis, MO/Parkway Central) made it 2-0 at 56:46 with his second goal on the year.  Whalen scored off an excellent pass from Jake Stowers (SR, St. Louis, MO/Duchesne) from the back.  Hertel (FR, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) got the start in goal and picked up his first collegiate win with the shutout.  Hertel made three saves in the contest.

The Gorlok defense stifled the Panther attack any time it was able to carry the ball into the Webster end.  Webster outshot Greenville, 15-6, and had six shots on goal to the Panthers three.

Webster is 1-0 in the SLIAC and 3-5 overall with the win.  Greenville falls to 0-1 and 3-5-1 overall.

The Gorloks host Illinois Wesleyan University on September 27 at the Soccer Park.  Webster resumes play in the SLIAC with a game vs. Iowa Wesleyan University on October 1 in Mt. Pleasant, IA.
