Women's Soccer Opens With Loss At Edgewood, 1-0

The Webster University women's soccer team had a dominant performance, but wound up on the short end as it lost, 1-0, to Edgewood College, on September 4 in Madison, WI.  Webster, the coaches preseason favorite in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was hoping to start off with a win, but the opportunistic Eagles were the victors.

The first half was scoreless as the Eagles got off a couple shots on goal early, but the Gorloks dominated play in the latter part of the period.  Webster's best chance to score was on a through ball Briann Johnson (JR, Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) ran onto and got off a shot.  The Eagle keeper dove and deflected it with her fingers, with the ball bouncing off the goalpost and out of play.  Webster had five shots, including three on goal.  Edgewood had four shots, with Webster starting goalie Alisa Coralic (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) making three saves.

Webster continued to dominate at the outset of the second half.  Three minutes into the second half the Gorloks had a golden chance to score when the Eagles were called for a foul in the box, but Jodi Kaiping's (SR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) penalty shot went wide right.  The Gorloks had two other shots saved and had a pair of corners in the first seven minutes of the half.  Twenty minutes into the half the Gorloks held an 8-0 advantage in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks but still were scoreless.

Despite a 12-0 advantage in shots for the half at the time, Edgewood broke the scoring drought at the 80:28 mark with its first shot.  A shot by Brianna Pagan JR, St. Louis, MO/Washington) with two minutes remaining clanged off the post, but the Eagles hung on for the win.  Webster outshot Edgewood, 15-1, in the second half and 20-5 in the contest but couldn't notch a goal.

Aly Miller (FR, Middleville, MI/Thornapple) made her collegiate debut, taking over the nets from Coralic in the second half.  She took the loss for the Gorloks.

Edgewood Eagles, is a member of the Northern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Webster travels to Rock Island, IL, on September 10 to take on Augustana College.  The Gorlok's home opener is on September 13 vs. North Central College at the Soccer Park.
