The Webster University women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker as Spalding University hit a lay up at 0:00 on the clock in overtime, falling 76-74, on January 7 at Grant Gym. A Kelsey Miller three-pointer sent the game into overtime and Miller was a one-person scoring machine in the OT, but it wasn't enough as Webster fell.
In a rare instance so far this season, the Gorloks found themselves trailing after one period, 21-19. Webster shot well and picked up seven steals in the frame, but Spalding controlled the boards, grabbing 15 rebounds-including six offensive, to Webster's six total. The Golden Eagles sank eight of nine free throws while the Gorloks hit just six of 11.
Spalding went into halftime with a 36-31 lead. The Golden Eagles had an even greater edge on the boards in the second period, out rebounding the Gorloks, 12-3, for a 27-9 advantage for the half. The Golden Eagles had eight second chance points to none for the Gorloks.
Webster and Spalding traded baskets throughout the third period, but with the Gorloks trailing by five, 47-42, with 1:15 left and the Golden Eagles at the line, Webster was called for a technical foul. Spalding hit both technical free throws, then connected on both for the foul to take a 51-42 lead and Webster trailed by nine, 53-44, entering the fourth. Spalding continued its scalding pace at the free throw line, hitting 21-23 at that juncture of the contest. The Gorloks did a better job on the boards, with the Golden Eagles having a 13-10 edge for the third period. Webster also forced eight Spalding turnovers in the period.
But in the fourth period Spalding continued to control the boards, and the ability to pound the ball inside kept them on top for most of the period. A basket by Megan Brandt (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) at 2:30 pulled Webster within four, 65-61, and a three-pointer by Miller (JR, Elizabeth, IN/South Central) at the :47 mark tied the contest at 65-65. Neither team could score in the final seconds as the game headed into overtime.
The Golden Eagles got off to a good start in the extra session with a three-pointer, but Miller had a three-point play (basket and free throw) for the Gorloks at the other end to tie it right back up. Spalding responded with another three-pointer but Webster was careless on the inbound play, stepping over the end line and giving the ball back to the Golden Eagles, who hit another three and led by six. Another basket by Miller at 1:30 in OT cut the deficit to 74-72, and a lay up by Miller at :55 tied the game up.
After a near-miss by Webster with five seconds on the clock, Spalding ran the floor and with their player falling out of bounds, hit a lay up to win the game, 76-74. It was definitely one of the more exciting, if not infamous, finishes for the Gorloks in a game at Grant.
Miller finished with 16 points on 6-9 shooting, 3-4 from the three-point line. She had seven points in the overtime session. Taylor Lucas (JR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) had a team-high 20 points, on 9-16 shooting, and Aley Lucas (JR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) had 13 points on 4-5 shooting.
Spalding finished with a 50-29 edge in rebounds and was 23-25 from the free throw line. The Gorloks finished with 19 steals in the game and forced 31 Golden Eagle turnovers.
Webster falls to 3-2 in the SLIAC and 10-3 overall. Spalding is 2-3 in the SLIAC and 7-5 overall. The Gorloks now start a four-game road stretch, starting with a game at Blackburn College on January 11.
