The Webster University men's basketball team lost to Eureka College, 86-78, on January 9 at Grant Gymnasium. The tough loss for the Gorloks dropped them to 3-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Gorloks trailed early, 19-14, when a three by Xavier Dortch (SR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner St) and a jumper by Enrique Tankins (FR, Wentzville, MO/Timberland) tied it up at 19-19. Meanwhile, Eureka's Shea Feehan was a one-man scoring machine, dropping in 25 points in the game's first 11 1/2 minutes, 18 via six three-pointers. Despite the show, Webster managed to trail by just two, 46-44, at the half.
While the Red Devils were 9-16 (56,3%) from the three-point line in the half, Webster shot 19-33 (57.6%) overall from the field and out rebounded Eureka, 17-13. for the half.
An Evan Milligan (SO, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central) lay up at 15:30 in the second half gave Webster its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest, 53-52. The Red Devils went on a 9-0 run to open up a 63-55 lead at 12:40. The Gorloks responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 63-63 at 9:10. A Dortch three-pointer at 7:05 gave Webster the lead at 68-67, but Eureka would can a pair of three-pointers to go back on top, 75-70, with 3:23 remaining.
A Tankins lay up at 1:50 made it 77-74, and after a pair of Eureka free throws, a Hunter Ward (SR, St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) dunk at 1:18 cut the deficit back to three at 79-76. Another Eureka three, at :55, extended its lead to 82-76, and sealed Webster's fate.
Ward had 10 points, a team-high nine rebounds and eight assists. C.J. Moore (SR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian) had 13 points and a team-high nine assists. Tankins had a team-high 14 points, coming off the bench, and was 6-7 from the field with seven rebounds. Milligan had 11 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots.
Eureka was an eye-popping 22-22 from the free throw line. Webster wound up shooting 50% (33-66) for the game but were just 4-19 from the three-point line.
Webster is 3-3 in the SLIAC and 6-7 overall. Eureka is now 4-2 and 9-3 overall. The Gorloks begin a four-game road stretch, starting with a game at Blackburn College on January 11, in Carlinville, IL. Webster's next home game isn't till January 24, when it hosts Principia College.
