Webster Wins Fourth Straight, 1-0 Over Westminster

Gorloks Remain Undefeated In SLIAC

The Webster University men's soccer team continued its challenge for a SLIAC title, defeating rival Westminster College 1-0, on October 12 at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks improved to 3-0-1 in the SLIAC and extend their win streak to four games.  Kyle Hertel had the shutout and Edin Mehmedovic scored the lone goal in the contest.

Webster scored early in the second half on the goal by Mehmedovic (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville), at 47:54.  Ben Aziz (FR, Paris, France/Marquette) pounced on a misplayed ball by the Westminster defense and, when Aziz was challenged by a defender, crossed it to Mehmedovic, who shot it in the top left corner for the score.  It was Mehmedovic's first collegiate goal.

Westminster had its best chance to tie at the 80:00 mark on a loose ball that eluded Webster goalie Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint).  A Blue Jay forward shot it from just outside the six-yard box, but Gorlok defender Juan Garcia (SO, St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) slid and deflected it just before it could cross the goal line.

Westminster thought it had a goal seven minutes into the game on a shot just inside the six-yard box, but the Blue Jay forward was offside.  There were only eight shots total in the half with Webster goalie Hertel having to make one save and his Westminster counterpart had two.  Westminster wound up with a 15-7 edge in shots for the game.  Hertel had three saves total as he picked up his second shutout of the year and evened his record at 4-4.

Webster in now 8-4-2 overall on the season.  Though Webster has a 22-15-2 edge in the series between the two teams, Westminster had won the last three meetings before the Gorloks snapped that string.  Webster's last four-game win streak came in 2014 when it had two.  The Gorloks had a six-game win streak in 2013.

Westminster took its first loss in the SLIAC and is now 3-1 in the conference and 4-7-1 overall.  The Blue Jays have won the SLIAC Tournament the last four years and were picked second in SLIAC coaches 2017 pre-season poll.

Webster travels to Jacksonville, IL, on October 14 to take on MacMurray College.
