Still in the hunt for the SLIAC regular season title, the Webster University men's soccer team downed Greenville University, 1-0, on October 24 at the Soccer Park. Tyler Kendrick had the lone goal and Matt Amick had the shutout for the Gorloks, who remain the only undefeated team in the SLIAC at 6-0-2.
The Gorloks and Panthers had a very competitive first half with neither team getting much of an upper hand. Each team got off four shots, though Webster did have three on goal. There was only one corner kick in the half.
Webster's best chances came on a shot by Nermin Hajrizi (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) right into the Panther goalie, and a shot wide of the goal by Edin Mehmedovic (FR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville).
In the early going of the second half, the Gorloks put pressure on offensively. Juan Garcia (SO, St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) and Mehmedovic both got off shots that were saved and at one point, seven of Webster's eight shots were on goal.
But it was Kendrick (SO, St. Louis, MO/Parkway) who got Webster on the board, beating the Greenville goalie one on one, after a pass from David Allred (FR, St. Louis, MO/Bishop DuBourg), at 62:19. It was Kendrick's third goal of the season, putting him into a seven-way tie for top goal scorer for the Gorloks.
Amick (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) got the start in goal for the Gorloks and after having to make just one save in the first half, came up with some big stops as the Panthers had six shots on goal out of their 11 total in the second half. Amick remained undefeated for his freshman campaign, improving to 5-0-2 on the season.
Webster now has a nine-game unbeaten streak, and is 7-0-2 in that stretch. Webster is 6-0-2 SLIAC and 11-4-3 overall. The Gorloks entered the evening one point behind Fontbonne University, 6-1 in the SLIAC. The Griffins defeated Spalding on a goal with 22 seconds remaining in the second OT to stay in first at 7-1.
Webster concludes regular season play with a game at Spalding University on October 28, in Louisville, KY.Â
