Webster Finishes 2nd In SLIAC At 7-0-2 w/Win At Spalding

The Webster University men's soccer team completed an undefeated season in the SLIAC, winning at Spalding University, 3-1, on October 28, in Louisville, KY.  The Gorloks wound up 7-0-2 in the conference and finished second in the SLIAC.  Fontbonne won its finale at Principia College to wind up 8-1, or one point ahead of Webster (win = 3 pts, tie = 1 pt).

Edin Mehmedovic (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) gave Webster a 1-0 lead with a goal at 24:43.  The Golden Eagle goalie couldn't hang onto a ball Jacob Ridenhour (FR, Jerseyville, IL/Jerseyville) crossed through the Spalding goal box, and Mehmedovic was on the doorstep to pick up his second goal of the season.

Ridenhour just missed making it a 2-0 Webster lead several minutes later when a shot of his hit the goalpost.  Spalding would tie the game at 38:28 and it was 1-1 at the half.  Webster had an 8-6 edge in shots for the half.  Matt Amick (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) manned the nets for the first half.

In the second half, Webster kept up a barrage of shots in the early going.  A shot by David Allred (FR, St. Louis, MO/Bishop DuBourg) was deflected by the Spalding keeper and Ridenhour got off a shot as well that was deflected.  Once again, Mehmedovic was there to give the Gorloks a 2-1 lead with his third goal of the year at 51:27.

After a foul on Ben Aziz (FR, Paris, France/Marquette) by the Golden Eagles at 74:15, Dino Music (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) set up for the free kick from a few yards outside the Spalding box. The Music blast eluded the Golden Eagle keeper and Webster had a 3-1 lead, as Music scored his team-high fourth goal on the season at 74:57.

Kyle Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint), who took over in goal for the second half, picked up the win.  He is 6-4-1 on the year.  Webster finished with an 18-9 edge in shots, with 10 of them on goal, and an 8-5 advantage in corners.

Allred and Hunter Olaso (FR, Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) were very active in the contest, challenging with multiple slide tackles.  The always steady Webster defense also stepped up in the contest with Juan Garcia (SO, St. Charles, MO/Duchesne), Eric Tate (JR, St. Louis, MO/Oakville), Dylan Jannin (FR, Perryville, MO/Perryville), and Cameron Killian (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) getting good reviews from the Gorlok coaching staff for their work.

Again, Webster finished the regular season at 7-0-2 and 12-4-3.  Spading is 4-5 in the SLIAC and 7-10 overall.

Next up for the Gorloks is the SLIAC Tournament where they will face Principa in the first round.  With the win, Webster did clinch the opportunity to host its first round game in the tournament, on November 1, at the Soccer Park.
