The Webster University men's soccer team had a big win on the road, defeating Fontbonne University 1-0, on October 3, in Clayton, MO. A Dino Music goal at 76:57 was the lone tally in the defensive struggle, as Webster keeper Kyle Hertel made it hold up in the nets.
Thirty minutes into the second half, Webster had outshot Fontbonne, 5-2, for the period but had none on goal in the defensive affair. But starting at the 72 minute mark the Griffins committed a series of fouls, including a yellow card. Music (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) took advantage with a free kick a couple yards outside the Fontbonne penalty box, that he buried with a lazer for his team-leading third goal of the season.
Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) made a save at 78:20 as things began to get testier on the field. The Griffins had several more fouls, include two more yellow cards called on them after the Webster goal. The Gorloks got in on the foul action themselves with two quick calls, including a yellow at 84:41, as the referees kept the game under control. Fontbonne had one last shot go wide with 2:30 left in the contest as Webster prevailed.
In the first half, Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) made a save with 40 seconds left, and staved off another Fontbonne opportunity when he made a save off a corner kick at the 41:00 mark. The Griffins had a couple of good opportunities starting at the 31:30 mark in the first, getting off a trio of corner kicks, that led to a pair of blocked shots by the Webster defense. Hertel would finish the half with four saves.
The Gorloks had a chance at the other end, seconds earlier, when a shot by Justin Schmidt (SO, St. Louis, MO/Metro) was saved. Dino Music (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) and Edin Mehmedovic (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) both had gotten off shots that were saved by the Fontbonne goalie half way through the period. The Gorloks made good use of their five shots in the half, with all five coming on goal, but the teams were scoreless at the half.
Hertel wound up with six saves as he earned his second win of the year, and his first shutout. Webster finished with six shots in the second half, and the only one on goal was Music's game winner.
Webster and Fontbonne were picked 3-4, in that order, in the SLIAC coaches pre-season poll.
Webster is now 1-0-1 in the SLIAC and 5-4-2 overall. Fontbonne falls to 1-1 in the SLIAC and 6-4-1 overall. Webster leads the series bwtween the teams, 20-17-4. The teams had split their last 10 games, each winning five, before the Gorloks win.
