The Webster University men's soccer team did everything but find the back of the net in the first half, but scored two second half goals and made them stand up as it defeated Blackburn College, 2-1, on October 7 at Carlinville, IL. The Gorloks broke a scoreless tie with a goal by David Allred at the 70 minute mark but needed an insurance goal by Nermin Hajrizi four minutes later for the win.
The Gorloks outshot the Beavers, 9-2, in the first half and had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. Dino Music (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) hit the crossbar in the first half, but that is as close as Webster would get to scoring.
Finally, at 70:38, Allred (FR, St. Louis, MO/Bishop DuBourg) took a pass from Edin Mehmedovic (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) and scored his second goal of the season to put Webster on top at 1-0. Just under four minutes later, at 74:29, Allred found Hajrizi (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) open as Hajrizi scored his second goal of the year.
Allred just missed adding another tally when he hit the crossbar with a shot. Hajrizi's goal turned out to be the game-winner as the Beavers cut the lead in half at 86:18 on a goal on a restart, just outside the Gorlok penalty box. The Beaver forward took a quick shot as the Gorlok defense was setting up and caught Webster goalie Kyle Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) at the post. That would be the last score of the contest as Webster won 2-1.
The slip up on the Blackburn free kick was the only Webster mistake of the afternoon as once again the Gorlok back line played very well and Hertel allowed just the one goal. Hertel faced eight shots and made two saves, both in the second half, as he improved to 3-4 on the year with the win.
Webster finished the game with a 16-8 edge in shots, and 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Webster is now 2-0-1 in the SLIAC and 6-4-2 overall. The Gorloks have a non-conference tilt on October 9 as they play Finlandia University (MI) at the Soccer Park.
