Just when it seemed the Webster University men's soccer team may be heading to overtime and a possible third tie on the year, Hunter Olaso found David Allred for a game-winning goal at 83:37 as the Gorloks defeated Finlandia University, 2-1, on October 9 at the Soccer Park.
The first 25 minutes were played between the penalty boxes as only three shots had been taken by both teams combined. But at the 25:39 mark, Jacob Ridenhour (FR, Jerseyville, IL/Jerseyville) scored on a shot from just inside the left side of the box. Ridenhour had taken a pass from Ben Aziz (FR, Paris, France/Marquette) on the play. The goal was Ridenhour's first collegiate tally and the assist was Aziz' first point.
The teams finished the half just in time as lightning struck and sent the contest into a weather delay. The delay lasted approximately an hour and twenty minutes. Webster had a 4-2 edge in shots and freshman Matt Amick (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh), who got the start in goal for the Gorloks, made one save.
When play finally resumed, it didn't take the Lions long to score. Finlandia tied it at 1-1 at 49:30 after a shuffle in the Webster goal box for a loose ball. Tucker Hively (SR, St. Louis, MO/Priory) had a chance when he went one on one in the Finlandia goal box with the Lion goalie at 57:00, but got stuffed. Ryan Gonzalez (FR, Sugar Land, TX/Clements) had an excellent chance at 69:00 when he dribble around two defenders into the Lion goal box but was stuffed on his shot attempt as well by the Finlandia goalie.Â
With 10:00 left in the game, the teams had taken still only taken 12 shots combined, with Webster having a 7-5 edge, and the Finlandia goalie making three saves to Amick's one. The teams had only taken a combined six corner kicks as well as offensive opportunities were few.
But Olaso (FR, Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) and Allred (FR, St. Louis, MO/Bishop DuBourg) made the Webster world right with their goal at 83:37. Olaso corralled a through ball on the right side of the top of the Finlandia box and made a nice cross to a streaking Allred, who headed it in from the left corner of the Lions goal box. It was his third goal of the year, tying Dino Music (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) for the team lead. Edin Mehmedovic (SO, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) nearly added an insurance goal with a shot off the goalpost one minute later.
Amick picked up the win and is 3-0-2 on the season for the Gorloks in the nets. Webster wound up with a 10-5 edge in shots.
Webster is now 7-4-1 and has a three-game win streak. Finlandia, a member of the American Collegiate Athletic Association is now 5-6. The Lions had a four-game win streak coming into the game. Webster and Finlandia met once previously, with Webster winning 5-2 in 2015 at the Soccer Park.Â
Finlandia was the final regular season non-conference game on the schedule. The Gorloks will host Westminster College on October 12 at the Soccer Park.
