Kohawks Klaw Gorloks, 77-60, In Classic First Round

The Webster University men's basketball team lost its first round game in its Webster Classic, 77-60, to Coe College, on November 24 at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks only trailed by two at the half, but the Kohawks pulled away in the second half to win the contest handily.

A three-pointer by Elijah Macias (FR, San Antonio, TX/Medina Valley) helped the Gorloks pad an early 11-6 lead at the 13:42 mark in the first half.  The Kohawks took a 16-15 lead on a three-pointer of their own at 9:39, but it was short-lived as a three by Josh Johnson (SO, St. Louis, MO/Clayton) put Webster back on top, 18-16.  Coe slipped back ahead, 20-19, at 7:09.  Johnson tied it back up with a jumper at 4:10, at 23-23, but Coe pulled back in front with its biggest lead at 29-23 before ending the half with a 29-27 advantage.

The half featured six lead changes and six ties.  Webster shot 37.5% (12-32) for the half as Coe shot 44.8% (13-29).  The Gorloks only committed four turnovers to the Kohawks eight and only had one less rebound as Coe had an 18-17 edge for the half.

After a couple of ties early in the second half, the Kohawks took a 40-33 lead at 15:48.  Webster closed to within two, but a Coe three-pointer at 12:56 put them in front, 45-40.  Coe would increase its lead to 52-40 at 10:36 after a pair of buckets sandwiched around a three gave it a 10-0 run.  A basket and free throw extended Coe's lead to 17, at 65-48, with 5:56 remaining.  From there the Kohawks coasted to the win.

Johnson led Webster with 20 points.  Nigel Wilcox (FR, Alpharetta, GA/Centennial) had 12 points and Enrique Tankins (SO, Wentzville, MO/Timberland) finished with 10.

Coe, from Cedar Rapids, IA, a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is 2-2.  Webster is now 1-3 and will face Centre College (KY) in the Consolation Final on November 25.  Carthage College (WI) downed Centre, 61-41, in the other first round contest, and will face Coe in the championship.
