Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Niel DeVasto Sports Information Director

Gorloks Scotch Scots, 79-44

The Webster University women's basketball team improved its non-conference record to 4-1 as it defeated Monmouth College (IL), 79-44, on December 14 at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorlok pressure defense took the taller Scots out of their game and a 24-8 Webster edge in the second period put the contest out of reach early. The game gave Webster the opportunity to get a lot of players time off the bench.

Webster forced five turnovers in the first five minutes of the game.  A jumper by Aley Lucas (SR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) at 4:17 in the first period gave Webster an 11-10 lead.  Lucas and her sister, Taylor Lucas (SR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) had provided four points each for the Gorloks.  Webster would take advantage of five more Monmouth miscues at it took a 16-12 lead to end the period.  Nine of the Gorlok points would come off turnovers.

The Gorloks forced eight more turnovers in the first five minutes of the second period to extend their lead to 30-12, on a 14-0 run.  That run expanded to 17-0 on a Darieana Hunter (FR, Norman, OK/Norman) basket with 3:40 remaining as Webster led, 33-12, and headed into the locker room up, 40-20.  Jaysea Morgan (SO, Fisk, MO/Twin Rivers) came off the bench to score eight points for Webster, on 4-4 shooting.

The Scots had a big edge on the boards, out-rebounding the Gorloks, 20-12.  But that height advantage was completely negated by Webster's suffocating defense that wound up forcing 23 turnovers in the half as the Gorloks scored a whopping 27 points off them.

Webster hit six of its first 10 shots in the third period to pad it's lead to 54-26 at 5:05.  Aley Lucas was 3-3 as her point total ballooned to 13.  A three-pointer by Jade Sawyer (SO, Republic, MO/Republic) extended Webster's lead to 63-30, and the period ended with the Gorloks on top, 63-34.  Webster would up shooting 9-18 (50%) for the period.

With the bench clear, Webster coasted to the 79-44 final in the fourth period.  Fourteen players saw the floor for the Gorloks in the game as 12 got into the scoring column.

Aley Lucas finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-7 shooting and Morgan had 13 points on 5-6 shooting.  Hunter and Kylie Shoot (FR, Ashland, MO/Southern Boone) each hit double figures with 11 points each.  Ebony Bailey (SR, Dolton, IL/Seton Academy) had a team-high six assists for Webster and added six rebounds.  Taylor Lucas had a team-high eight rebounds.

Webster will travel to Eureka College (IL) on December 16, then will head to California for three games over the holiday break.
