Gorloks Grind Down Griffins With 84-74 Win

The Webster University men's basketball team led from start to finish as they defeated Fontbonne University, 84-74, on December 9 at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks jumped off to an early lead, let the Griffins in the door a couple times in the game, but mostly maintained a double-digit lead throughout.

The Gorloks sprinted to a 10-0 lead to open the game, with an exclamation point of a Nigel Wilcox (FR, Alpharetta, GA/Centennial) dunk to finish the run.  Webster led, 20-9, at 11:45, but the Griffins closed within six points, at 22-16.  Webster extended the lead back to 12 at 32-21 at 5:53, and led 44-32 at the half.

Webster shot 54.5% (18-33) for the half, and had a 23-16 edge on the boards.  Once again, Christian Crespo (FR, Royal Palm Beach, Royal Palm Beach) had another hot first half, scoring 12 points on 5-8 shooting.  Crespo had 18 first half points in the Gorloks' previous contest, an 89-65 win over Robert Morris-Peoria.

Webster continued to maintain a double-digit lead in the second half and would extend the lead to 84-64 with 2:48 remaining in the contest, before allowing the Griffins to score the last 10 points in the game for the 84-74 final.

Crespo finished with a team-high 22 points.  Parker Van Nest (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) had 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.  Van Nest was 6-7 from the field.  Enrique Tankins (SO, Wentzville, MO/Timberland) had 13 points, nine rebounds, a team-high six assists, and added two blocked shots.  Wilcox had 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three blocks in the game.

Webster is now 2-1 in the SLIAC and 5-4 overall.  The Gorloks have beaten the Griffins four straight and have won 20 of the last 22 meetings between the two.  Webster leads the overall series, 35-24.  Fontbonne is 0-3 in the SLIAC and 2-6 overall.

The Gorloks travel to Eureka College (IL) on December 16 before a 13-day break.  Webster will head to Nashville, TN, on December 29 to face Berry College (GA).
