Women's Basketball Rolls Over Blackburn, 96-49

The Webster University women's basketball team locked up a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament with a 96-49 win over Blackburn College, on February 11 at Grant Gym.  The Gorloks remained tied for third place, at 9-5, with Fontbonne University, but fifth place Westminster was eliminated with its eighth conference loss.  The top four regular season teams advance to the tournament.

Webster bolted to a 19-4 lead, six minutes into the first period.  The Gorloks would finish the frame ahead, 24-6.  Webster forced 18 turnovers in the period alone, and had seven steals.  The Gorloks would expand the lead to 47-6, five minutes into the second period before heading into the locker room at the half up, 62-20.

Webster forced 26 turnovers and 13 assists in the half.  The Gorloks shot 60% (21-35), including 50% (7-14) from behind the three-point line.  Jade Sawyer (FR, Republic, MO/Springfield Republic) had a team high 14 points for the half, on 4-5 shooting...all from beyond the arc.  Ebony Bailey (JR, Dolton, IL/Seton Academy) had 10 points in the half.

Sawyer kept the Gorlok scoring machine rolling, hitting her fifth three-pointer 30 seconds into the third period.  That period ended with Webster up, 81-29.  The Webster reserves got plenty of playing time in the fourth, with all 16 available players seeing the floor in the contest.  Fourteen players got into the scoring column for Webster.

The Gorloks wound up shooting 50.8% (31-61) for the game, and were 54.5% (12-22) from the three-point line.  Webster was 22-28 (78.6%) from the free throw line.  The Gorloks finished with 37 turnovers forced on the afternoon, and 20 steals.

Sawyer wound up with a game-high 17 points, shooting 5-6 from the three-point line.  Taylor Lucas (JR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) had 12 points, four assists, and three steals.  Bailey had 10 points and three assists.  Jaysea Morgan (FR, Fisk, MO/Twin Rivers) had a team-high five steals, and added three rebounds and four points.  Natalie Busscher (SO, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein) came off the bench for nine points.

Webster is 9-5 in the SLIAC and 17-5 overall.  The 17 wins ties for the third highest total in a single season and is the fourth time head coach Jordan Olufson has reached the mark.  Webster had won five out of its last six games.

The Gorloks final two regular season games are on February 15 and 18 as Webster hosts MacMurray College and Fontbonne University.
