Blue Jays Wing By Gorloks In SLIAC Semis

The Webster University men's basketball team's season ended with a loss in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semi-finals to Westminster College, 75-61, on February 24 at Greenville, IL.  The Gorloks were unable to fend off several Blue Jay scoring bursts as Westminster advances to the championship with the win.

Webster used an 11-0 run to spring it to a 13-4 lead at 15:03 in the first half.  A pair of Westminster three-pointers ended the run, with a Rabasa Dobbins-Turner (SR, St. Benedict at Auburndale) basket sandwiched in between.  Dobbins-Turner had scored seven of the Gorloks' points as they led, 15-10.  The Blue Jays hit two more jumpers to increase their run to 7-0 as they closed within one, 15-14, at 10:25.

Tehvynn Crenshaw (SR, Mobile, AL/Murphy) and C.J. Moore (SR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian) had back to back baskets for Webster, with Moore getting a bonus shot, to give the Gorloks a 20-14 lead at 8:47.  The Blue Jays responded with a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to take their first lead, 24-22, since the opening seconds of the contest.  A Dobbins-Turner three-pointer at 2:01 gave Webster a 31-28 lead, but Westminster would tie the game as the teams went into the half at 31-31.

Dobbins-Turner had 10 points in the half and Evan Milligan (SO, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central) had eight points for the Gorloks.

Westminster started the second half with a 7-0 run to grab a 38-31 lead at 18:29.  The Gorloks reeled off eight points to regain the lead, 39-38, finished off by a Tony Jones (SR, Raymore, MO/Raymore Peculiar) jumper at 15:27.  With the game tied at 41-41, the Blue Jays countered with a 6-0 spurt for a 47-41 lead at 13:13.

Xavier Dortch (SR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner St) hit back to back three-pointers for Webster to pull the Gorloks within one, 50-49, at 11:20 and a Moore jumper temporarily gave them the lead.  In a span of just 1:18, the lead changed hands five times with Westminster finally tying it up with a free throw at 55-55 at 8:48.

After the Blue Jays took a 60-55 lead at 7:08, the teams went almost two minutes without a point being scored.  Unfortunately for the Gorloks, Westminster was the one to break the ice with a basket at 5:09.  When the Blue Jays hit a three-pointer at 4:23, the Gorloks were in a deep 10-point hole.

Westminster completed a 20-4 run in a six and a half minute span at 1:09 and were heading to the SLIAC Championship.  The Blue Jays had the hotter hand from the field on the night, with a 51.8% (29-56) to 41.7% (25-60) shooting edge, including a 59.1% (13-22) to 35.7% (5-14)  advantage from beyond the arc.

Milligan had a team-high 15 points for Webster, and had five rebounds.  Dobbins-Turner had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Moore finished in double figures also with 10 points.

Webster split with Westminster during the regular season.  The Gorloks were 11-7 in SLIAC and finished 14-12 overall.  Nine seniors wore the Gorlok uniform for the last time. La'Relle Brown (Woodbridge, IL/Downers Grove South), Crenshaw, Dortch, Adam Etter (Albers, IL/Mater Dei), Jones, Moore, Jonathan Odjo (West Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast), Collin Tabor (Brighton, CO/Brighton), and Dobbins'Turner.  Hunter Ward (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood), who missed the second half of the season, is also graduating.

Webster has a big void to fill in 2017-18 with the loss of those 10 seniors, with one full-time starter and one part-time starter remaining.  The Gorloks one returning full-time starter is Milligan, a SLIAC First Team All-Conference choice.
