Tigers Overcome Gorlok Lead For 71-70 Win

The Webster University men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 71-70 loss to Iowa Wesleyan University, on February 4 at Grant Gym.  The Gorloks, at 9-5 in the SLIAC, fall to fourth place with four conference contests left, a game and a half behind Greenville and Westminster Colleges.

The first half saw back and for action with the game tied at 12-12 at 12:18.  Webster went on a 10-3 run to take a 22-15 lead at 8:08.  Wesleyan battled back to pull within one at 25-24 at 3:08.  Adam Etter (SR, Albers, IL/Mater Dei) drained a three-pointer to give the Gorloks as 29-24 lead at 1:54.  Evan Milligan (SO, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central) hit a three and Tehvynn Crenshaw (SR, Mobile, AL/Murphy) hit a jumper to extend the lead to 34-26, but the Tigers narrowed the margin to three, 34-31, at the half.

The Gorloks shot 50% (13-26) for the half, including 5-8 (62.5%) from beyond the arc.  Milligan already put up a double double for the contest, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the half.

Once again in the second half, the action went back and forth early as Webster led, 40-37, at 16:00.  A basket by Milligan and a pair of free throws by Rabasa Dobbins-Turner (SR, Memphis, TN/St. Benedict at Auburndale) gave Webster a 44-37 lead.  Tony Jones (SR, Raymore, MO/Raymore-Peculiar) hit a banker to give the Gorloks their biggest lead, 55-43, with 10:39 remaining.   Wesleyan battled back, going on a 20-8 run to tie the game at 63-63 with 4:55 to go.

C.J. Moore (SR, Homestead, FL/Miami Killian) put Webster back on top with a pair of free throws and he followed that with a nifty driving lay up to make it a 67-63 Webster lead with 4:05 remaining.  Another lay up by Moore, and a follow up free throw on a foul, gave Webster a five-point lead with 2:35 left on the clock.  Moore would foul out at 1:36 and Wesleyan knocked down both free throws to close within one.

The Tigers missed a three at 0:40 and after Xavier Dortch (SR, Stockton, AL/Faulkner St) was fouled on a rebound of his own missed three pointer at 0:16.7, he missed and Wesleyan was fouled at the other end at 0:08.8.  The Tigers hit both free throws to take a 71-70 lead.  The Gorloks used four time outs in those final seconds to set for a final play, but a three-point attempt by Dortch at the buzzer was off the mark.

Milligan finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, both team highs.  Etter had 12 points and a team-high four steals and Moore finished with 11 points.

Webster is 9-5 in the SLIAC and now 12-9 overall.  Iowa Wesleyan improves to 10-4 in the SLIAC and 14-7 overall.  The Tigers are not eligible yet for post season play in the SLIAC.

It was Hall of Fame Day at Webster.  The five newest members, who were inducted in a ceremony at the University Center that evening, were introduced at half time.  They included Christy Capkovic (soccer), Megan Niederschulte Garrett (soccer), Darin Hoggatt (basketball), Katy Meyer (basketball) and Will Savage (baseball).

The Gorloks travel to Louisville, KY, on February 8 to face Spalding University.
