Pair Of Sixes Mean Two Losses For Gorloks

The Webster University softball team lost to Millsaps College (MS), 6-0, and to Roger Williams University (RI), 6-4, on March 12 at the PFX Games in Clermont, FL.  Down 5-0 early against Roger Williams, the Gorloks rallied but came up short.  In the days' opener, Webster faced a hot Millsaps pitcher in the loss.

In game two, Roger Williams turned a pair of triples and an error into a three-run first inning.  A Hawks lead off triple and single scored a run, and a Webster error helped extend the inning off starter Alexis Spriggs (SR, Scott City, MO/Scott City).  With two down, a second triple scored two unearned runs and Roger Williams led 3-0.  A double and pair of singles scored two more in the second as the Hawks led 5-0.

Webster rallied in the third.  Emily Kolisch (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) doubled to lead off and a Kate Sullens (SR, Highland, IL/Highland) triple sent her home.  Katelyn Johnson (SR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock) singled in Sullens and after a walk by Abby Burroughs (FR, Edwardsville, IL/Triad), Kayla Day (SR, Caruthers, CA/Caruthers) singled Johnson home to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Roger Williams added a run in the sixth to make it 6-3 and the Gorloks were faced with a comeback in the bottom of the seventh.  Chyanne Fulmer (SO, DeSoto, IL/Carbondale) led off with a bunt single.  With one out, Sullens singled to left to put two aboard.  With two down, Burroughs singled in Fulmer to make it, 6-4, but a fly out to center left the tying runs on.

Sullens finished the game 3-4 with a triple, RBI, and run scored.  Day was 2-4 with an RBI, and Burroughs was 1-2 with an RBI and two walks.  The Gorloks finished with 10 hits in the game.

In the opener vs. Millsaps, the Webster bats were silent as Sullens had the only Gorloks hit, in the fourth inning.  Webster had only three runners reach base as the Majors starter, Kayla Davidson, struck out 12 while recording the one-hitter.

Morgan Mansur (JR, Lemont, IL/Mt. Assisi Academy) started for Webster and took her first loss of the season as she fell to 4-1.  The Webster defense made four errors leading to only three of the six runs Mansur allowed as earned in her four innings of work.  Millsaps scored two in the first and added four in the fourth.  Chelsea Thornley (JR, Clinton, MO/Clinton) finished up for the Gorloks, throwing two scoreless innings.

Webster is now 10-4 on the season.  Roger Williams, a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, is 3-2 and Millsaps, a member of the Southern Athletic Association, improves to 12-5.

The Gorloks have a day off before winding up their trip with games against the University of Minnesota-Morris and North Park University (IL) on March 14.
