Box Score 2 The Webster University softball team wound up its Florida trip with wins over Minnesota-Morris, 10-3, and North Park University, 7-0, on March 14 at the PFX Games in Clermont, FL. The Gorlok bats came back alive in the sweep and Chelsea Thornley and Morgan Mansur had complete game wins, Mansur's a two-hit shutout, on the mound.
The Gorloks took an early lead
vs. Minnesota-Morris, scoring three in the top of the first and built an 8-1 advantage by the fourth as they won going away. Taylor White (FR, St. Charles, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) got Webster going with a lead off single in the first. After White swiped second, Kate Sullens (SR, Highland, IL/Highland) singled with one down to score her.
Abby Burroughs (FR, Edwardsville, IL/Triad) singled and Kayla Day (SR, Caruthers, CA/Caruthers) walked to load the bases. Sullens took home on a passed ball and a Karissa Cardenas (SR, Henderson, CO/Prairie View) ground out scored Burroughs for a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars scored a run in the bottom half off Thornley (JR, Clinton, MO/Clinton) but the Gorloks got it back in the top of the second. A Sidney Coleman (SR, Fredericksburg, VA/Fountain/Ft. Carson) single, Terri Dearth (JR, Lemont, IL/Mt. Assisi) double, and a walk to Emily Kolisch (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) loaded the bases. Coleman scored on an errant pick off to make it 4-1.
Webster broke open the game in the fourth. Dearth singled and White got a bunt hit with one down. With two out, Sullens walked and Burroughs reached on an error as Dearth scored. Day then cleared the bases with a double and the Gorloks led 8-1.
The teams exchanged single runs when the Cougars scored in their half of the fourth and the Gorloks added a run in the top of the fifth. Minnesota-Morris added another run on a solo homer in the fifth, but Dearth ended the scoring with a solo shot, her first home run of the year, in the seventh as Webster led, 10-3.
Thornley had a complete game, going all seven innings and giving up 10 hits, two walks, and two earned runs. She struck out five as she improved to 6-1 on the year with a 2.56 ERA.
Dearth was 3-4 with a home run, double, three runs scored, and an RBI. Day was 1-2 with a double and three RBIs, and White was 2-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Coleman was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. The Gorloks banged out 11 hits in the contest while snapping a four-game losing streak.
Against North Park, Mansur (JR, Decatur, IL/Mt. Zion) had a perfect game through five innings vs. the Vikings. She gave up a pair of singles in the sixth, the only two North Park runners to reach base in the contest. Mansur struck out seven as she improved to 5-1 and lowered her ERA to 2.33 on the season.
Webster jumped on top early as well against North Park in the first. Katelyn Johnson (SR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock) doubled with one out, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sullens. Burroughs reached on an error and Dearth, continuing with a hot bat, doubled her home. Katlyn Garza (JR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North) followed with a two-run homer, a blast over the center field fence, for a 4-0 lead.
Johnson singled in a run in the second, Dearth scored on a passed ball after reaching on an error in the third, and Sullens singled home the Gorloks' final run in the sixth for the 7-0 final.
Garza was 2-2, with a home run, two RBIs, a walk and run scored. Johnson was 2-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored, and Sullens was 1-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base.
The Gorloks are 12-4 on the season after winding up its Florida trip at 4-4. Minnesota-Morris is a member of the Upper Midwest Conference, and North Park is a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Webster has 10 days off before returning to action on March 24 vs. Coe College (IA) at the Washington University Invitational in Clayton.
