The Webster University baseball team lost to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 10-2, on March 17 in Auburndale, FL. The Warhawks, ranked seventh nationally in the latest ABCA poll, are the third ranked team the Gorloks played in four days. Webster was 18th in the poll.
The Warhawks jumped on the Gorloks in the first inning with an eight-run outburst. Webster starter C.J. Lee (JR, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) gave up three straight singles, then issued a pair of walks before another single and triple ended his day with the score, 6-0. Brett Jungles (SR, Naperville, IL/St. Francis) relieved and was greeted with a two-run homer to make it 8-0, before retiring the side without any further damage.
Webster got two of those runs back in the top of the second. Jake Milosch (SO, St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East) was hit by a pitch and Ben Dinter (JR, Gurnee, IL/College of Lake County) singled. After Matt Wollnik (SR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley) reached on a force at second, with Milosch taking third, he took second on a passed ball. A Nate Tholl (SO, Tinley Ridge, IL/John A Logan CC) ground out scored Milosch and a two-out single by Kyler Kent (FR, Pottsboro, TX/Pottsboro) scored Wollnik to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Jungles wound up going six innings for Webster. After allowing the home run, he threw five scoreless innings until being touched for two Warhawk unearned runs in the sixth. After retiring the first two batters, a Gorlok error and three straight singles plated two to make it a 10-2 game. He gave up seven hits, two walks, one earned run, and struck out five. Joe Elfrink (SR, Leopold, MO/Leopold) took over in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings.
Lee took the loss for the Gorloks, falling to 1-2 on the season. Kent was 2-2 with an RBI as Webster finished with six hits for the game.
Webster is now 8-5 on the season. Wisconsin-Whitewater won the NCAA III Midwest Regional hosted by Webster at GCS last May, advancing to the World Series. They are 5-1 on the season.
The Gorloks conclude their Florida trip with a game against the College of St. Scholastica (MN) on March 18. Webster then has a week off before beginning play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a doubleheader vs. Greenville College on March 25 at GCS Ballpark.
