The Webster University softball team lost to Coe College (IA), 6-1, on March 24 in Clayton, MO. The Gorloks fell to the #10 ranked Kohawks in the Mizuno Tournament, hosted by Washington University.
Webster took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Terri Dearth (JR, Lemont, IL/Mt.Assisi Academy) led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Sidney Coleman (SR, Fredericksburg, VA/Fountain-Ft. Carson). After a walk to Katlyn Garza (SR, O'Fallon, MO/Ft. Zumwalt North), Karissa Cardenas (SR, Henderson, CO/Prairie View) sent Dearth home with a sac fly.
Starter Alexis Spriggs (SR, Scott City, MO/Scott City) held Coe scoreless until the fourth. A leadoff double by the Kohawks advanced to third on a passed ball. After a strikeout, the runner was able to score on an infield single to second baseman Cardenas. Another double sent the go ahead run home as Webster trailed, 2-1.
A Gorlok error and two singles loaded the bases for Coe in the fifth. A two-out hit made it a 3-1 Kohawk lead. Morgan Mansur JR, Decatur, IL/Mt. Zion) took over on the mound in the sixth for Spriggs, and three doubles and a single added three more to the Coe lead to make it 6-1, and that was the final.
Spriggs took the loss and is 1-3 on the year. Dearth and Kate Sullens (SR, Highland, IL/Highland) were each 1-3 with a double as Webster had just three hits on the afternoon.
Webster is now 12-5 on the season. Coe College improves to 14-1. The Kohawks, 5-2 lifetime vs Webster, was 25-10 in 2016.
