The Webster University baseball team is now 11-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after drubbing Eureka College, 17-0 & 13-3 (7 inn), on April 23 at GCS Ballpark. The Gorloks have a firm grip on first place in the SLIAC West Division and are now 21-9 overall on the season.
In
game one, the Gorloks grabbed a 9-0 first inning lead, added two in the second, and four in the third, building up a 15-0 lead in the seven-inning affair. Ben Dinter (JR, Gurnee, IL/College of Lake County) had the biggest blow, a three-run homer. It was his third straight game going deep, having homered in both games at Principia on April 18. Webster would add single runs in the fourth and fifth for the 17-0 final.
Meanwhile, Webster starter Josh Fleming (JR, Columbia, IL/Columbia) was sailing along, giving up just three hits and striking out 11 in seven shutout innings. He is 5-0 on the year with a 0.44 earned run average, and has 84 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings.
Dinter was 2-2 with five RBIs, double, home run, and three runs scored. Matt Wollnik (SR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley was 3-4 with three RBIs, two doubles and two runs scored. Conner Wardlaw (JR, Arnold, MO/Jefferson College) was 1-2 with two RBIs, a double, stolen base, walk, and two runs scored, and Kyle Uhrich (SR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves) was 2-2 with two RBIs, a triple and two runs score.
The Gorloks took charge in the first inning in
game two as well. A seven-run first was highlighted by a three-run homer by Christian Dahncke (JR, Vienna, IL/Southeastern Illinois College) and a solo shot by Eric Outlaw (FR, Park Ridge, IL/Maine West). It was Dahncke's first round-tripper as a Gorlok and Outlaw's second of the season.
Webster added four more in the third and two more in the third as Webster starting pitcher Uhrich added a two-run shot, the Gorloks third home run of the contest. It was his fourth of the year as Webster took a 13-0 lead. On the mound, Uhrich was skating along, giving up one hit and striking out 10 through five innings. The Red Devils reached him for two runs in the sixth, on a double and two-run homer over the center field wagon gate.
Uhrich went six innings, giving up four hits, two runs, and walking one. He struck out 11 as he improved 5-1 on the year. Uhrich has struck out 57 in 32 1/3 innings on the season. Austin Beccue (JR, Red Bud, IL/Gibault Catholic) finished up with a scoreless seventh inning as Webster won on the 10-run rule.
Outlaw was 2-3 with two RBIs, a home run, and two runs scored. Uhrich was 2-3 with two RBIs, a home run, two walks, and two runs scored. Dahncke was 1-2 with three RBIs, a home run, two walks, and two runs scored. Brandon Smith (SR, Imperial, MO/Seckman) was 1-2 with two RBIs, a double and a walk.
Webster and Eureka will complete the series with a single game on April 24 at Vianney High School in Kirkwood.
