The Webster University men's soccer team saw its three-game win streak go by the boards in a 2-0 loss at Washington University, on September 12, on Clayton, MO. Wash U took a 1-0 first half lead and fended off several early second half Gorlok challenges for the win.
The Bears put the pressure on early in the match. After a Wash U shot was blocked, then a second shot deflected by Webster goalie Kyle Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint), the Bears got a corner kick. Wash U scored on a header off the corner for a 1-0 lead at 5:22. The Bears had a 10-1 shot advantage for the half, with Hertel making three saves, but still only led 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, a header by Nermin Hajrizi (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) at 52:37 was just wide and a shot by Ben Azi (FR, Paris, France) was saved by the Bear goalie at 55:34. Hunter Olaso (FR, Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) added a shot over the net at 60:19. At that point the Wash U defense buckled down, and the Bears added an insurance goal at 82:19 on a header.
Hertel wound up making six saves as Wash U had 21 shots in the contest and seven corner kicks. He falls to 1-2 on the season.
Webster entered the contest on a three-game streak, and is now 3-2 on the season. Wash U, who now has won three straight, improves to 3-0-1 on the year. The Bears are ranked fifth in the current Central Region rankings.
Webster hosts Rhodes College (TN) on September 15 and Hendrix College (AR) on September 17 at the Soccer Park.
