The Webster University men's soccer team played to a 1-1, double overtime draw with Rhodes College, on September 15, at the Soccer Park. Webster tied the game up in the second half on an impressive goal by Nermin Hajrizi, but neither team could cash in on goal-scoring opportunities in the OT sessions.
Rhodes got on the board first with a goal at 28:42. The Lynx had a chip, just right of the goal at the end line, which was headed past Webster goalie Kyle Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint). Hertel didn't have much of a chance on the play.
Webster tied the game at 50:35 of the second half when Hajrizi (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) lofted a shot over the Lynx' goalie's head from the right corner of the six-yard box. Joacquin Soto (FR, Flagstaff, AZ/Flagstaff) set up Hajrizi with a lead ball for the assist on the goal.
It would turn out to be Webster's only shot in regulation. The Gorloks held the Lynx to only 10 shots in regulation, with four on goal as Hertel and Matt Amick (FR, St. Louis, MO) came up with three saves. There were only four corner kicks total in regulation as well in the defensive struggle.
In the first overtime period, both teams got off two shots, with the Gorloks getting off two corners as well. The second OT was more spirited with Rhodes having a loose ball in front of the net that was fanned on, then when corralled and passed back in front of the net, Amick made a hockey goalie 'leg-lift' save while laying flat on the ground.
Back on Rhodes' end, Webster just missed winning the game when Tucker Hively (SR, St. Louis, MO/Priory) got off a header right in front of the goal that the Lynx goalie just got his fingertips on to deflect over the crossbar. Eric Tate (JR,St. Louis, MO/Oakville) had a near miss, with another deflection off the Lynx goalie's fingertips, with a shot from 20 yards out with a minute remaining in the second OT.
Amick, who took over in goal in the second half, went 65 minutes, allowing no goals, and making four saves to earn the tie. He has allowed no goals in 162 minutes of play.
Webster is 3-2-1 on the year with the tie. Rhodes is now 2-1-2 on the season.
Webster will be back at home on September 17 to face Hendrix College (AR) at the Soccer Park.
