The Webster University women's soccer team won its sixth straight game to start the 2017 season, beating Hendrix College (AR), 2-1, on September 17 at the Soccer Park. It is the first time since the 2007 season that the Gorloks have won as many games to open the season.
Joi Wilson (FR, Tracy, CA/Tracy) opened the scoring by getting Webster on the board with a goal at 23:40 in the first half. Melissa Kasper (SO, Chicago, IL/Oswego) carried the ball down the right wing and crossed it into the six-yard box, where Wilson directed it out of the air into the net. It was Wilson's team-leading fifth goal.
Minutes later, Brianna Pagan (SR, St. Louis, MO/Washington) just missed a goal when she got a shot off from the top of the box, that a sprawling Warrior goalie just got deflected wide. A corner kick by Sydney Tedesco (SR, Belleville, IL/Belleville East) set up Pagan's near miss.
Webster settled for a 1-0 halftime lead. The Gorloks out shot the Warriors, 6-4. Alisa Coralic (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) started in goal for the Gorloks and had one save.
Hendrix had more of an offensive push early in the second half and, after a scrum in the Webster goal box, netted a goal at the 59:00 minute mark. Aly MIller (SO, Middleville, MI/Thornaple) had taken over the nets for the Gorloks in the second half.
A penalty kick was called on Hendrix at 65:46, when NIcole Bascio (JR, St. Louis, MO/Timberland) was taken down in the box. Pagan took the kick and hit home with a shot into the upper right corner of the net for her second goal on the year. Webster had its lead back at 2-1. Pagan had another near miss, with eight minutes left in the contest, when a shot by her from the right corner of the Hendrix six-yard box was deflected wide by the Warrior goalie.
Webster is 6-0 on the year. The Gorloks started the 2007 season at 8-0. Hendrix falls to 3-4 on the year. Webster will host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (IN) n September 20 at the Soccer Park.
