Gorloks Suffer Agony, But Not Defeat, Beating Fightin' Engineers In OT

The Webster University women's soccer team saw a commanding effort rewarded with a win, after a near miss, as the Gorloks defeated Rose-Hulman Institute, 2-1, on September 20, at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks gave up a game-tying, last-minute goal, after controlling play throughout regulation, but a goal by Joi Wilson one minute into the first OT secured their seventh straight victory.

The Gorloks had a dominant effort in the first half, with a 10-0 edge in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks, but couldn't get on the scoreboard as the teams entered the locker rooms scoreless at the break.  Six of the Webster shots came off the bench, including both shots on goal.

Webster took charge again in the second half, with Brianna Pagan (SR, St. Louis, MO/Washington) having a point blank shot from just outside the six-yard box that was deflected at 50:30.  Melissa Kasper (SO, Chicago, IL/Oswego) followed a couple minutes later with a shot from the right side of the Rose-Hulman goal box that was saved.  Webster had built a 17-3 advantage in shots before it finally struck.

The Gorloks broke the goal drought at 74:50 on a goal by Nicole Bascio (JR, St. Louis, MO/Timberland).  Sydney Tedesco (SR, Belleville, IL/Belleville East) took a free kick from 28 yards out, and her blast squirted away from the Rose-Hulman goalie.  Bascio was on the doorstep to punch it in for her first goal of the season as Tedesco got the assist.

Then came the stunner. The Fightin' Engineers had a kick from 45 yards out that found its way to a Rose-Hulman player, who punched it in for a back door score.  The game was tied 1-1 with 48 seconds remaining.  Webster wound up with a 22-5 edge in shots, and an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks in regulation.

But the Gorloks overcame the shock quickly in the first overtime session.  Olivia Osterhage (SO, St. Louis, MO/Eureka) carried the ball down the right wing and crossed it to Wilson (FR, Tracy, CA/Tracy) who banged in her sixth goal of the season.  Alisa Coralic (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville), who took over the nets in the second half, picked up her second win of the year.

Webster is 7-0 on  the year.  Webster's seven-game win streak is its longest since the Gorloks started the 2007 season at 8-0.  Rose-Hulman a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, falls to 2-6.   .

Webster travels to Lexington, KY, on September 23 to take on another Heartland Conference member, Transylvania University.  Then on September 26, the Gorloks  take the short trip down Big Bend to face #1 ranked Washington University.
