The Webster University men's soccer team won its home opener, defeating Monmouth College (IL) 1-0, on September 3 at the Soccer Park in Fenton, MO. Gorlok goalkeepers Eli Smith (SO, Orlando, FL/Dr. Phillips) and Kyle Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) had the shutout for Webster.
Tyler Kendrick (SO, St. Louis, MO/Parkway Central) scored the game's lone tally at the 30:34 mark in the first half. Emilio Mattingly (SO, Perryville, MO/Perryville) served it from 20 yards outside the penalty box on the left side. Nermin Hajrizi (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) flicked it on the right side of the goal box and Kendrick punched it in off the bounce. Though outshot, 8-2, in the half, the Gorloks capitalized on their only shot on goal.
Webster's next best chance for a goal came midway into the second half when Joacquin Soto (FR, Flagstaff, AZ/Flagstaff) took a blast from the top of the box that the Fighting Scots goalies just got his fingertips on it, and deflected it off the crossbar.
Smith had two saves in the first half and Hertel had two also in the second half in securing the shutout. Smith picked up the win for the Gorloks.
Webster is 1-1 on the season with the win. The Gorloks head to Chicago on September 9-10 for a pair of contests with Concordia University and Rockford College. Webster will be at Washington University on September 13, before returning to Soccer Park on September 15 to face Rhodes College.
