The Webster University men's soccer team made a long afternoon worth the effort with a 2-1 double overtime win at Concordia University-Chicago, on September 9. A Tucker Hively header found its mark in the second overtime for the win.
Hively (SR, St. Louis, MO/Priory) headed in a pass from Dino Music (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) for his first goal of the season. Hively made sure the teams didn't go home with a tie after 107 plus minutes of play.
The teams were scoreless through the first 70 minutes of play when Logan Takizawa (FR, Holualoa, HI / Konawaena) dribbled into the six-yard box and slipped a shot by Cougar goalie. It was his first collegiate goal. Just over 10 minutes later, Concordia tied it up when they scored on a penalty kick that eluded Webster goalie Kyle Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint).
Hertel would go all the way in the nets for Webster, picking up his first win of the season, making three saves in the process.
In the second OT period, the Gorloks had two chances to score with shots by Ryan Gonzalez (FR, Sugar Land, TX/Clements) at 92:18 save and. less than a minute later, Hively at 93:01. Takizawa got a shot off that was saved at 103:09 in the second OT before Hively's heroics.
Webster wound up with 15 shots in the game with nine on goal. Concordia finished with just nine shots total, with four on goal.
Concordia, a member of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, falls to 0-3 on the season. Webster improves to 2-1 and will finish its trip to Chicago with a game at Rockford University on September 10.
