Men's Soccer And Iowa Wesleyan Fit To Be Tied, 2-2

The Webster University men's soccer team began play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-2, double overtime tie with Iowa Wesleyan University, on September 30 at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks start at 0-0-1 in the SLIAC.

Sophomore Michael Baldridge (Chicago, IL/Mount Carmel) put Webster on top, 1-0, with a goal at 12:03 in the first half.  Dino Music (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) lofted a corner kick that Justin Schmidt (SO, St. Louis, MO/Metro) got off a shot on, that hit the goal post.  The rebound was corralled by Baldridge, who fired it in for his first collegiate goal.

Both teams had opportunities during the half.  Webster had a near miss when a shot by Schmidt was just wide.  Iowa Wesleyan had a shot that hooked away from Webster starter Matt Amick (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) and caromed off the goalpost before it was cleared.  The Tigers wound up with an 8-5 edge in shots for the half, but the Gorloks entered the locker room with a 1-0 lead.

Iowa Wesleyan tied it up at 49:36 in the second, when a mix up by the Webster defense left a ball free in the Gorlok goal box that a Tiger forward punched in for a score.  Webster possessed the ball in the offensive half for a good part of the next 20 minutes of play, with a 4-0 advantage on corners and 4-2 in shots.

But at 71:16 a Wesleyan forward got off a 20-yard shot that nicked the crossbar and went in to give the Tigers a short-lived 2-1 lead.  Webster answered one minute later when freshman David Allred (St. Louis, MO/Bishop DuBourg) scored his first collegiate goal at 72:40.  Schmidt had a free kick from 30 yards out that Nermin Hajrizi (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) got a head on and Allred, sitting on the back door, shot it in.  Hajrizi was credited with the assist.

The Tigers had a chance with four minutes remaining when they had a free kick just outside the Webster penalty box.  The kick was high and wide and neither team had another good scoring chance as the game went to overtime.

Wesleyan had the first good chance to score with another free kick, just outside the Webster penalty box, at 91:40.  The shot was was high as it harmlessly sailed onto an adjacent field.  A shot from 15 yards out from Music at 95:00 was right at the goalie and Ryan Gonzalez (FR, Sugar Land,TX/Clements) had a shot saved just inside the goalpost at the 96:00 mark.

In the second overtime period, neither team had an good scoring opportunities as the game ended in a draw.

Amick went 110 minutes in goal, making three saves as the Tigers had 20 shots total, and five on goal.  He is now 2-0-2 on the year.

Webster is 0-0-1 in the SLIAC and 4-4-2   Iowa Wesleyan is now 0-0-1 and 4-4-2 as well.  Webster is now 4-0-1 vs. Wesleyan in the history of the rivalry.  The game was Webster's fourth overtime game in 10 contests.

Webster continues play in the SLIAC with a match at Fontbonne University on October 3 as the 'Battle of Big Bend' rages on.
