The Webster University women's soccer team got off to a flying start in the 2017 SLIAC campaign, defeating Iowa Wesleyan University 12-1, on September 30 at the Soccer Park. Eight different Gorloks scored in the contest, with four players picking up a pair of goals.
Webster scored early, and often. Chelsea Noser (SR, Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) score a goal at the 2:32 mark, with an assist by Joi Wilson (FR, Tracy, CA/Tracy). Just over a minute later, Noser made it 2-0, with her sixth goal of the year. Noser now had 24 career goals, moving into 13th place on Webster's all-time list. Lauren Nuelle (SR, St. Louis, MO/St. Josephy's Academy) assisted on the goal.
Wilson scored her team-high seventh goal at 11:41, assisted Brianna Pagan (SR, St. Louis, MO/Washington). Carolyn Ries (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) made it 4-0 at 13:31 with the assist to Wilson, her third point of the game.
Jen Laaksonen (SO, St. Louis, MO/Fox) got in on the scoring at 28:42, with the assist by Cassidy Bishop (FR, Salt Lake City, UT/). Briann Johnson (JR, Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) had back to back goals at 30:48 and 32:06 to make it 7-0. Kelsey Hausmann (SR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) and Laaksonen had the assists on the goals.
Laaksonen netted her second goal at 40:56, with an assist to Nicole Bascio (JR, St. Louis, MO/Timberland) and then assisted on a goal by Kaleigh Finney (FR, Concord, CA/Northgate) at 41:15. Hausmann closed the scoring for the half at 44:21, with an assist by Claudea Kuykendall (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston) and Webster led, 10-0 at the half.
Nuelle scored off a free kick from 25 yards that hit the crossbar and bounced off the Tiger goalie into the net. Iowa Wesleyan got on the board with a free kick with eight minutes left in the game with a shot that hit the crossbar as well and bounced just over the goal line. Alissa Coralic (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) was in the net for Webster, having taken over at the half for starter Abbey Mercer (SO, Granite City, IL/Granite City). Mercer improved to 3-0 with the win.
Hausmann finally closed out the scoring with just over three minutes remaining with her second goal. Bishop picked up her second assist, and the final was 12-1.
Webster had 65 shots in the contest, including 34 on goal.
The Gorloks were the coaches pre-season favorite in the SLIAC to win their sixth straight regular season title. Webster, 9-1, saw its eight-game win streak snapped at #2 Washington U. Webster lifetime is 5-0 against Wesleyan.
Webster travels to Gay Field in Clayton, MO, on October 3 to face Fontbonne University.
