The Webster University women's soccer team defeated Fontbonne University, 1-0, on October 3 in Clayton, MO. The Gorloks, ranked seventh in the Central Region, made a first half goal by Lauren Nuelle stand up, as the stout Webster defense and keeper Aly Miller, held the Griffins at bay.
Like the men's game that preceeded it, the women's game started out as a defensive struggle, with Webster having just two shots to Fontbonne's four until senior Lauren Nuelle (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) netted her second goal of the year to put the Gorloks up 1-0 at 34:00. Nuelle's goal came on a blast from approximately 30 yards out.
The goal pepped up the Webster attack as the Gorloks got off three shots over the next few minutes with Briann Johnson (JR, Hannibal, MO/Hannibal) shooting one high and another wide, and Jen Laaksonen (SO, St. Louis, MO/Fox) fired one wide. The Gorloks had four corners to none for the Griffins, but couldn't find the back of the net until Nuelle's tally. Webster wound up with a 6-5 edge in shots for the half.
Miller (SO, Middleville, MI/Thornapple) started in goal for the Gorloks. Miller had shutout #2 ranked Washington University for a half her previous effort.
Melissa Kasper (SO, Chicago, IL/Oswego) took a shot at getting Webster on the board quick in the second half, but her attempt was saved at 48:30. The Gorloks kept the offensive momentum going early, with five shots in a five-minute span from the 51 minute mark through the 56 mark. The Griffins broke the string with a couple shots of their own that were blocked by the Webster defense.
Webster responded with three more quick shots as the offensive pace picked up in the contest. The Gorloks outshot the Griffins 8-2 in the first 15 minutes of the half. The Griffins made a late attempt to tie with 3:34 remaining, but Miller came up with the save. Webster had a dominant effort in the second half, outshooting Fontbonne 15-9.
With the shutout, Miller improves to 4-0 with a 0.43 goals against average on the season.
Going for a sixth straight SLIAC title, Webster is now 2-0 in the SLIAC and 10-1 overall with the win. Fontbonne falls to 1-1 in the SLIAC and 4-8 overall. The Gorloks, who have an 8-game win streak over Griffins, now lead the all-time series 23-3.
Next up for Webster is a trip to Carlinville, IL, to face Blackburn College on October 7.
