Gorloks Blow By Highlanders, 84-43

The Webster University women's basketball team ran up a big early lead and finished with an 84-43 win at MacMurray College, on January 10 in Jacksonville, IL.  The Gorloks came out of the gate flying on offense and defense as it took a 23-9 first period lead and didn't let off the pedal until the fourth as they improved to 4-2 in the SLIAC.

After the first period barrage, Aley Lucas (SR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) started the Gorloks right back up with a layup off a Meagan Brandt (SR, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan) pass in the second. Ebony Bailey (SR, Dolton, IL/Seton Academy) followed with a layup and Aley Lucas had a basket and bonus.

After another Aley Lucas basket, and a Bailey steal and Kelsey Miller (SR, Elizabeth, IN/South Central) layup, it was a 34-11 lead. Aley Lucas had seven of the Gorlok points in the first five minutes of the period. Webster would lead 45-14 at the half.

A 5-0 Webster run in the first 40 seconds of the third period prompted a MacMurray timeout. It was a sign the Highlanders were going to experience Gorlok deja vu in the second half.  MacMurray was able to slip in some points on the board, but not enough to stem the Webster tide. Fast break baskets and three-pointers extended the Gorlok lead to 70-26 entering the fourth period before settling for the 84-43 final.

It was all hands on deck for the Gorloks as 15 players saw action with 13 getting double figure minutes and 14 different players getting in the scoring column.  Despite the prototype defensive effort by Webster it was its ability to completely dominate the boards that stood out the most, with a 47-24 edge in rebounds and a 17-5 advantage on the offensive glass.  Webster shot 51.5% (35-68) from the field, including 46.2% (6-13) from beyond the arc.

Aley Lucas led with 14 points, as she was the only Gorlok to hit double figures with everyone jumping in on the scoring.  Freshman Darieana Hunter (Norman, OK/Norman) had a team-high 12 rebounds.  Seven Gorloks had seven or more points in the contest.  Webster averages 75 points per game as a team.

Webster at 4-2 is in 3rd in the SLIAC and 10-4 overall.  Webster has won 10 straight against MacMurray and 34 of the last 36 meetings dating back to 2000.

The Gorloks are home on January 13 to host Blackburn College at Grant Gymnasium.
