Davian Joseph's Two Free Throws With 14 Seconds Left Seals Gorloks Home Win Over Eureka

WEBSTER GROVES - Trailing by one point with 14 seconds left in the game, Webster University senior forward Davian Joseph (Philadelphia, Pa./Lewis & Clark CC) stepped to the free throw line after being fouled on a drive to the basket and calmly sank both free throws to seal the Gorloks come-from-behind 79-78 win over Eureka College Wednesday evening in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Grant Gymnasium.

Joseph's two free throws helped the Gorloks rally from a five-point deficit with a little under three minutes remaining against the Red Devils and extend its win streak to three straight games and improve its record to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the SLIAC. Eureka fell to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the SLIAC.

Sophomore guard Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) led the way offensively for the Gorloks as he finished with 20 points and seven assists. Along with Johnson, two other Gorloks finished in double digits in the win as freshman forward Nigel Wilcox (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) recorded a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds and blocked five shots, while freshman guard Christian Crespo (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) had 12 points and a career-high tying seven assists. On the night, WU had 26 assists on its 30 made baskets.

With his five blocks, Wilcox has now recorded 43 blocks on the season, which is fourth on the school's single-season blocked shot chart. Wilcox has now blocked four or more shots in four games this season, including back-to-back games of recording at least four blocks.

Joseph, who played 26 minutes in just his third start of the season, finished the night with five points, eight rebounds and four assists, two steals.

It appeared early on that the Gorloks wouldn't need Joseph's game-winning two free throws as Webster jumped out to an early 15-4 lead just a little under seven minutes into the contest. The game opening run was keyed by six points apiece from Crespo and Johnson.

After Eureka used a 5-0 run to pull within 15-9, the Gorloks answered again with a with a 6-2 run to push in front 21-11 with 10:29 left in the opening half. The run was capped by back-to-back baskets from senior guard Parker Van Nest (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and freshman guard/forward Edson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach).

From that point, the Red Devils, who are now tied for second in the SLIAC with Webster and Westminster, would outscore the Gorloks, 25-19, to drop WU's lead to 40-36 at the half. Eureka's run was keyed by 10 points from Feehan and seven points to Thomas, along with five 3-pointers.

Eureka opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 44-42 lead following a trey from Feehan with 18:29 left in the game. In fact, Feehan hit back-to-back treys during the run.

The teams would then take turns holding the lead until Wilcox scored back-to-back baskets in a span of 32 second to turn a 48-all tie into a 52-48 lead with 15:05 remaining in the game. Wilcox scored 13 of his 18 points after halftime.

Eureka, though, would answer with a 14-7 run to push out to a 62-59 lead with 9:28 left. The lead was shortlived as freshman guard Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) drilled a trey nine second later to tie the game at 62. After two free throws by Juergens gave EU a 64-62 lead, Nation would hit another trey with 8:04 remaining to give WU a 65-64 edge.

The teams would then once again trade baskets and the lead until Juergens hit two more free throws with 6:56 remaining to give EU a 68-67 lead. Juegens' two free throws helped spur a 5-0 run to give the Red Devils a five-point lead at 72-67 with 5:22 left.

After Bennington's basket gave the Red Devils five-point lead, the Gorloks began its rally as senior guard Michael Dunn (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida A&M) scored with 4:56 left to drop EU's lead to 72-69. Dunn would bring the Gorloks closer 18 seconds later thanks to two free throws that pull WU within a point at 72-71.

The Red Devils would then score six of the next eight points, including taking a 78-73 lead on two Bennington free throws with 2:45 remaining. Ironically, Bennington's two free throws would be the final points of the game for the Red Devils.

Johnson brought the Gorloks within two points at 78-76 following his trey with 1:35 left and after Ryan McElmurry missed a trey on EU's ensuing possession, WU would pull within a point at 78-77 following Joseph hitting 1-of-2 free throws with 38 seconds left.

On EU's next possession, McElmurry stepped the line for two free throws with 26 seconds left, but he promptly missed both shots to keep the Gorloks within a point to set up Joseph's game-winning moment.

Following Joseph's two free throws with 14 seconds left gave the Gorloks its 79-78 lead, the Red Devils missed a trey with a second left to seal WU's win.

Eureka was paced on the night by 20 points from Feehan, who left the game with an injury midway through the second half. Feehan, who tabbed this week's SLIAC Player of the Week, entered the game averaging an SLIAC-best 31.8 points per game. In addition to Feehan, four other Red Devils finished in double figures as Thomas tallied 15 points, while Bennington had 13 points off the bench. Juergens and Adam Dehm each had 10 points in the loss.

For the game, Webster shot 44 percent from the field and 40 percent from tne 3-point line, while Eureka shot 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from downtown.

Webster held a 39-37 edge on the glass and forced Eureka into 16 turnovers that led to just 11 points. Eureka, who forced 15 Gorlok turnovers, scored 16 points off those turnovers.

Webster will look to make four straight wins this coming Saturday, Feb. 3 as they travel to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, for a 3 p.m. SLIAC contest at Iowa Wesleyan University (4-16 overall, 4-9 SLIAC). The Gorloks picked up a 78-68 win earlier this month at home against Iowa Wesleyan.
