Volleyball Hits .298 in Sweep Friday at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - Webster University posted a .298 attack percentage here Friday evening to earn a three-set sweep over Eureka College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Reagan Athletic Complex on the Eureka College campus.

The victory extended Webster's win streak to nine consecutive matches and also extended its school record streak of 27 straight set victories since falling in three sets at then 10th-ranked WashU on Sept. 20 as Webster improved its record to 13-7 overall and 11-2 in the SLIAC. Since picking up a four set win at home over Eureka on Sept. 18, the Gorloks have won 30 ot its last 34 sets. 

In Friday's win, Webster recorded a season-high .298 attack percentage and had four players record six or more kills, including 13 kills and a .344 hitting percentage from senior right side hitter Torie Grassi (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain). In addition to Grassi, senior outside hitter Samantha Budrovich (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) added eight kills, while sophomore outside hitter Samantha Kruse (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) tallied seven kills and 10 digs and junior right side hitter Sarah Jacobs (Carbondale, Ill./Murphysboro) had six kills and hit .385 in the victory.

Defensively, Webster was outdug, 64-62, but held a 6-1 edge in blocks, including sophomore libero Kristen Farrah (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) led the way with 27 digs and moved within three digs of becoming the 14th Gorlok to record 1,000 career digs. It marked Webster's first win this season when getting outdug as they entered the match 0-5 this season when its opponent recorded more digs. 

Senior setter Kelsey Hamann (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and junior setter Jenna Rodriguez (Smithton, Ill./Freeburg) each had double-digit assists and combined for 15 digs as Hamann had 11 assists and eight digs and Rodriguez recorded 14 assists and seven digs. 

In the opening set, Webster jumped out to an early 10-6 lead, before Eureka used a 7-3 run to tie the set at 13. Three straight kills from Grassi pushed the Gorloks lead to 16-13. Eureka, though, answered with 4-2 run to pull within 18-17. The Gorloks would then use 4-2 run to take a 22-19 lead, before EC scored three of the next four points to drop WU's lead to 23-22. WU would seal the set win with back-to-back kills from Kruse and Grassi. In the set, WU hit .235 and got a combined 11 kills from Grassi (7) and Budrovich (4), while EC hit .109.

Webster jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second set, before the Red Devils used a 6-2 run to tie the set at 11-all. Following Eureka's run, WU would answer with a 7-0 run to push out to an 18-11 lead. WU's run was capped by back-to-back kills from Grassi and freshman middle hitter Kylie Burke (Belleville, Ill./Belleville East). The Red Devils, though, wouldn't go away as they responed with a 4-2 run to pull within 20-15 following a kill by Dooley. The Gorloks would then close out the set by scoring five of the final six points to post a 25-16 win. In the set, WU hit .359 and held EC to a .189 attack percentage. 

In the third set, Eureka scored the first three points and led 7-5 when the Gorloks used a 9-3 scoring run highlighted by five Eureka errors to take a 14-10 lead. The lead grew to 16-12, before the Red Devils used a 5-2 run to drop WU's lead to 18-17. The Gorloks would then close the set by scoring seven of the final nine points, including sealing the 25-19 set win with a kill from Kruse. In the set, WU hit .317 and held EC to an .095 attack percentage. 

Eureka (3-19 overall, 2-12 SLIAC) was paced offensively by 14 kills and 12 digs from Lexi Dooley. In addition to Dooley, Heather Robinson added eight kills and eight digs. Runa Akagawa and Madison Gayheart each had 19 digs to pace the Red Devils.

The Gorloks will look to make 10 consecutive victories as they return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 with a 6 p.m. home match against MacMurray at Grant Gymnasium. Prior to the match, Webster will honor its seniors in a prematch ceremony and the seniors that will be honored are Budrovich, Grassi, Hamann and junior middle hitter Taylor Kissel (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South), who is graduating this year and will be attending nursing school next fall.
