GREENVILLE, Ill. - Webster University remained perfect in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer play here Saturday evening as the Gorloks posted a 3-1 victory over Greenville University at Francis Field.
With the win, Webster improved to 12-2-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the SLIAC and remained tied for first in the league with Fontbonne, while Greenville fell to 10-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the league.
In Saturday's win, Webster, who has now won five consecutive matches, outshot the Panthers, 27-7 and held a 20-6 edge in shots on goal. It marked the eighth time this season that the Gorloks has taken 20 or more shots in a match and the third consecutive match in which they have taken 20 or more shots.
Senior midfielder
Carolyn Ries (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) got the scoring started late in the fourth minute of the match as she took a pass from junior midfielder
Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and connected on a shot from the right wing.
Ries' goal would be the only score of the first half as Webster held a 12-4 edge in shots in the period, including a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior forward
Nicole Bascio (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) would give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute as she took a pass from senior defender
Jillian Zimpfer (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) and connected on a shot from the left wing. The goal by Bascio was her ninth of the season.
Freshman defender
Chloe Dedic (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) got into the scoring act in the 85th minute as she took a pass from the right wing from junior forward
Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and scored her first career collegiate goal to give Webster a 3-0 lead. The assist by Kasper was her team leading 12th of the season.
Greenville, though, would spoil Webster's bid for a shutout late in the 86th minute as Dani Pierce tallied her 13th goal of the season on a penalty kick after drawing a foul inside the box to make the score 3-1 in Webster's favor.
Zimpfer led the way offensively for the Gorloks with five shots and three shots on goal, while Kasper, Bascio, Ries and junior midfielder
Payton Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) each had four shots and combined for 12 shots on goal as all four them had three shots on goal for the match.
Senior goalkeeper
Alisa Coralic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) played all 90 minutes in the net and recorded five saves, while allowing just that one goal on a penalty shot to improve her record to 11-2-1 on the year.
In five SLIAC matches this season, Webster has allowed just two goals, both of which have come on penalty kicks. In addition to Greenville scoring on a penalty kick on Saturday, Westminster scored their lone goal against the Gorlokson Oct. 3 in the 79thminute on a penalty kick. Webster won that match against the Blue Jays by a 3-1 score.
Maddie Saffel had three of GU's seven shots, while Pierce and Breanna Thomas each had two shots in the loss.
