CARLINVILLE, Ill. - Webster University began its regular season ending nine match road swing here Thursday evening by posting a three-set sweep over Blackburn College (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Dawes Gymnasium to extend its win streak to 11 straight matches.
With the win, Webster improves to 15-7 overall and 13-2 in the SLIAC and extends its school record for consecutive sets won to 33 and its SLIAC win streak to 13 straight matches. The Gorloks haven't dropped a set since falling in three hard-fought sets at then 10th-ranked WashU on Sept. 20. Blackburn falls to 5-18 overall and 5-10 in the league.
In Thursday's match, Webster got a balanced offensive attack as five players recorded five or more kills and the Gorloks outhit the Beavers, .165 to .088.
Senior right side hitter
Torie Grassi (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain) led the way with 10 kills and hit .233, while senior outside hitter
Samantha Budrovich (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and sophomore outside hitter
Samantha Kruse (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) each had seven kills and combined for nine digs. Junior right side hitter
Sarah Jacobs (Carbondale, Ill./Murphysboro) added six kills and hit .294 and junior middle hitter
Taylor Kissel (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) had five kills and four blocks.
On defense, Webster finished the match with 72 digs and outblocked Blackburn, 6-4. Sophomore libero
Kristen Farrah (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) finished with 23 digs and the NCAA Division III national individual leader in digs per set has now had 20 or more digs in a match 18 times, including four straight and moved within 15 digs of the school's single season record for digs as she now has recorded 644 digs and is averaging 8.59 digs per set.
In addition to Farrah, junior setter
Jenna Rodriguez (Smithton, Ill./Freeburg) added 15 digs and added 10 assists for her eighth double-double this season. Senior setter
Kelsey Hamann (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) had 20 assists and has now had double-digit assists in four consecutive matches and 17 times this season.
Along with Kissel's four blocks, Kruse had three blocks and freshman middle hitter
Kylie Burke (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) added two blocks for the match.
For the match, Webster hit over .175 in both the first and third sets as they hit .250 in the first set and then hit .189 in the third set. In the second set, the two teams combined to hit .044 as WU hit .071 and Blackburn hit .020.
Blackburn was paced offensively by nine kills and a .296 hitting percentage by Lucy Magnussen. Kaitlyn Wiegand added seven kills and 10 digs and Alanni Young had six kills and 10 digs in the loss.
The Beavers finished with 35 kills, but committed 23 attack errors on 137 attempts, including combining for 17 attack errors in the second and third sets.
Kendall Koop finished with 19 digs, while Kendall Burleyson had 19 assists and six digs.
The Gorloks will look to add two more victories to its current win streak as they play two matches at the Fontbonne Quadrangle in Clayton, Mo., on Saturday, Oct. 20. Webster will open the Fontbonne Quadrangle with an 11 a.m. match against the Griffins and then face Spalding at 1 p.m.
