FENTON, Mo. - Webster University saw its stay in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament upended here Wednesday evening as the seven-time SLIAC regular season champion Gorloks fell 2-1 in overtime to Greenville University in a semifinal round match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
The Gorloks, who more than likely concluded its 2018 season with Wednesday's setback, finishes with a 16-3-1 overall record and went 9-0-0 during regular season SLIAC play to claim its seventh straight regular season title and earn the No. 1 seed in the SLIAC Tournament. Webster entered play Wednesday ranked seventh in this week's NCAA Division III Central Regional rankings and 20 D-III teams will earn an at-large berth in this year's NCAA Tournament, so the loss to Greenville puts the Gorloks into that pool of possible at-large teams as the NCAA will unveil the 64 team NCAA Tournament field on Monday.
"Obviously, two great teams battling each other, both teams came out and I wouldn't have expected anything less than what Greenville gave to us tonight," said Webster head coach
Luigi Scire following his team's first loss since Sept. 26. "I am so proud of my team and I give my players all the credit in terms of a fantastic season. This (loss) hurts, it stings, but it doesn't take away all of the accomplishments and the success we had this season."
In Wednesday's match, senior forward
Nicole Bascio (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) helped force overtime as she tied the match in the 84th minute as she took a pass from both junior forward
Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and sophomore forward
Joi Wilson (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) and scored on a shot in the middle of the box from three yards out. Bascio's goal was her 16th of the season and 21st of her collegiate career.
With her assist, Kasper set a new single season school record for assists with 19. She entered the match sitting tied with former Gorlok Becki Wideman, who recorded 18 assists in 2000. Kasper is currently second in NCAA Division III in total assists and is also third nationally in assists per game (0.95).Â
Bascio's match tying goal was needed after Greenville's Megan Taylor scored on a header off a corner kick from Dani Pearce with a little under four minutes left in the first half.Â
In overtime, Webster junior midfielder
Payton Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) had a shot in the 92nd minute to win the game, but that shot was saved by Greenville goalkeeper Marjory Coates.Â
On the ensuing possession, Greenville's Jade Taylor scored off a turnover shot from three yards out to seal the Panthers semifinal win and snap Webster's two-year reign as SLIACÂ Tournament champions. It was the first goal of the season by Taylor.Â
"I was really proud of the effort we put in, especially in the second half, the composure and confidence that they had to continue applying pressure on Greenville's defense and then we finally found a way to tie the game up," said Scire, who is in his 20th season at the helm of his alma mater. "I really thought we had momentum going into overtime and it was an unfortunate play on the dead ball, but I tip my hat to Greenville."
After recording just six shots and one shot on goal in the first half, Webster's offense recorded 11 shots and four shots on goal in the second half to mount its rally. For the game, Webster outshot Greenville, 18-13, but the Panthers held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.Â
The Gorloks, who snapped its 31 match win streak against SLIAC teams dating to 2015 on Wednesday, also led in corner kicks, 7-6, including holding a 6-4 edge in corner kicks in the second half.Â
Bascio took five of those 18 shots and had three shots on goal, while senior defender
Jillian Zimpfer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Charles) added three shots and junior midfielder
Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Sandy) had two shots in the loss.Â
Breanna Thomas led Greenville (14-5-1 overall) with five shots and had three shots on goal, while Pearce, Megan Taylor and Jade Taylor each had two shots in the victory, which was just the Panthers' fourth ever win in SLIACÂ Tournament history as they improved to 4-13-0 all-time in the tournament.Â
Webster, who is now 18-6-3 all-time in the SLIACÂ Tournament, finished this season allowing just 16 goals in 20 matches, including allowing just a total of four goals over its final 10 matches of the year. In regular season SLIAC play, Webster allowed just two goals, both on penalty kicks, in nine league matches.Â
Senior goalkeeper
Alisa Coralic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) recorded five saves and allowed two goals in her final match of her career as her record fell to 14-3-1 on the season.
Marjory Coates (13-5-1) earned the win for the Panthers as she also recorded five saves and allowed one goal.Â
If Wednesday's match was the final one this season for the Gorloks, it marked the final contest for Webster's four-member senior class. The seniors this season were Bascio, Coralic, Zimpfer and midfielder
Carolyn Ries (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh).Â
"The question at the beginning of the season was How good was this this going to be after losing six seniors from last year's (NCAA tournament) team. They answered the question immediately. Their commitment, effort and hard work provided them with everything they needed to be successful," the Webster coach added. "I love this team and every individual that's a part of this program. This result tonight is going to motivate us and make us stronger going forward."
Greenville will now face No. 3 seeded Westminster in Friday's SLIACÂ Tournament Championship game at 7 p.m. in Fulton, Mo. Westminster earned its spot in the title game after defeating No. 2 seeded Fontbonne, 3-2, in penalty kicks after the two teams played to a 1-1Â draw after two overtimes.Â
