ELSAH, Ill. - Webster University waited out nearly a two hour lightning delay here Saturday afternoon before hitting the field and scoring five goals en route to posting a 5-0 shutout victory over Principia College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Principia Soccer Field.
With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to three straight matches and improves its record to 10-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the SLIAC, while Principia falls to 1-8-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.
Four days after earning the program's 300th all-time victory with its 3-1 win at Westminster, Webster secured the program's 301st all-time victory thanks to two goals apiece from both junior midfielder
Savannah Page (Sandy, Utah/Sandy) and senior forward
Nicole Bascio (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) and a goal from freshman forward
Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse) to post the win and remain one of just three undefeated teams in the SLIAC.Â
For the game, Webster finished with 40 shots and 26 shots on goal against the Panthers.
Page got the scoring started in the 19th minute as she took a pass from junior forward
Melissa Kasper (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and found the goal to give WU a 1-0 lead. Ironically, that would be the only the only shot that would find the net in the first half for the Gorloks as they recorded 21 shots and had 13 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of the match.
Webster and Page would tally her second goal just a little five minutes into the second half as she took a pass from Bascio for her second goal of the match and fifth goal of the season.Â
Bascio would make it 3-0 in the 55th minute as she took a pass from Kasper and found the net for her first of two goals in the match. Kasper's two assists in the match moved her season total to a team leading nine on the year.
In the 60th minute, Bascio tallied her second goal of the match to give the Gorloks a 4-0 lead. Bascio's second goal was assisted by both Page and junior midfielder
Olivia Osterhage (Eureka, Mo./Eureka). It marked the second time this season that Bascio has scored two goals in the match as she also tallied two goals in Webster's season opener against Concordia-Chicago.
Lande would complete the scoring in the 71st minute as she took a pass from freshman midfielder
Kaitlyn Theriot (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Liberty) for her third goal of the year.Â
Bascio led the way with a career-high eight shots, while Page and Kasper each had seven shots and combined for 11 shots on goal as Page had six and Kasper had five for the match.Â
Webster had 12 different players take at least one shot in the match and 10 different players took a shot on goal against the Panthers.Â
Principia finished with just seven shots on the day, including two from Sarai Marcano.Â
Senior goalkeeper
Alisa Coralic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) and junior goalkeeper Abby Mercer (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) each played a half and they combined to post the shutout. Coralic didn't record a save and faced just two shots in 45 minutes, while Mercer faced five shots and had three saves in her 45 minutes of action. Coralic earned the win and improved to 9-2-1 on the season.
Hannah Hathaway (1-8-0) took the loss in the net for the Panthers as she had 20 saves to go along with the five goals she allowed.
Webster will look to make its four straight wins in SLIACÂ play this coming Tuesday, Oct. 11 as they host Blackburn for a 5 p.m. SLIACÂ match at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
