Men's Soccer Wins Third Straight Match, Posts Home Shutout Over Blackburn on Senior Night

FENTON, Mo. - Webster University scored two goals in each half here Tuesday evening to post a 4-0 shutout victory over Blackburn College on Senior Night in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Worldwide Technology Soccer Park.

With the victory, Webster extends its win streak to three straight matches and remains undefeated in SLIAC play with a 3-0-0 record, while improving its overall record to 11-2-0 on the year. The 11 wins is one shy of 12 victories that last season's team achieved. Blackburn falls to 1-12-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the SLIAC.

Prior to Tuesday's match, Webster honored its three member senior class in a prematch ceremony. The three seniors this season are forward/midfielder Tucker Hively (St. Louis, Mo./Priory), goalkeeper Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) and defender Eric Tate (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville).

In Tuesday's match, Webster recorded season highs in both shots (45) and shots on goal (17) and tied a season high with four goals scored. The 45 shots is fourth most in a single match in school history and the most shots taken in a match by Webster since taking 46 shots last season against Eureka. In addition, Webster held a 15-1 edge in corner kicks.

While Webster's offense recorded season highs in shots, shots on goal and goals, the Gorloks defense was even stronger against the Beavers as they limited Blackburn to a total of three shots, including allowing just one shot in the second half. It was the seventh time this season that WU had held an opponent to less than 10 shots in a match.

The Gorloks got the scoring started in the match's opening four minutes as junior midfielder Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) took a rebound from junior midfielder Edin Mehmedovic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) and connected on a shot from three yards out to give WU a 1-0 lead. The goal was Garcia's fifth of the season, which is second on the team.

Hively would find the goal in the 11th minute on a header as he took a pass on header from sophomore defender Dylan Jannin (Perryville, Mo./Perryville) for his second goal of the season and fifth of his career.

Freshman forward Aamahn Murvin (Sahuarita, Ariz./Walden Grove) would tally his sixth goal of the season in the 63rd minute as he took a pass from freshman midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) and connected on a shot from three yards.

In the 87th minute, freshman midfielder Cody Ruhl (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville), who took six of his eight shots in the second half, would finally connect on a goal as he took a pass from junior midfielder Michael Baldridge (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) on a volley and connected from nine yards out for his third goal of the season.

In addition to Ruhl's eight shots, Hively finished with five, while Garcia, Murvin and sophomore midfielder Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena) each had four shots in the win. In total, 16 different Gorloks recorded at least one shot in the match and 12 Gorloks had at least one shot on goal.

McGhee, who was making his first start of the season in the net, picked up the win as he played 59-plus minutes and recorded one save. Freshman goalkeeper Matt Coffey (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) played the final 30-plus minutes and didn't record a save or face a shot on goal.

Prince Balaba, James Kiwanuka and Nick Russell each had a shot for the Beavers.

Alex Hammerlinck (1-11-0) took the loss in goal for the Beavers as he recorded 13 saves and allowed four goals.

The Gorloks will look to remain perfect in SLIAC play this coming Saturday, Oct. 13 as they travel to Greenville, Ill., to face Greenville University in a 5 p.m. SLIAC match.
