MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Webster University Men's Basketball opened up play here Saturday in the Maryville College Classic by shooting a season low 36 percent from the field and making just two of its 18 3-point shot attempts en route to suffering an 84-55 loss to Emory & Henry College at Boydson Baird Gymnasium on the Maryville College campus.
The Gorloks, who were looking for the program's first-ever 3-0 start, fell to 2-1 with the loss and will conclude play in the two-day event hosted by Maryville College at 12 p.m. on Sunday against Eastern (Pa.), who picked up a 68-65 win on Saturday against 19th-ranked Maryville.
Webster, who earned a 72-64 win at home on Wednesday against WashU, struggled offensively in Saturday's contest as they were held to season lows in points, field goal percentage and 3-point percentage. In fact, the 54 points were the fewest scored by the Gorloks since being held to 58 points last season against Spalding.
Junior forward
Enrique Tankins (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) led the way offensively for the Gorloks as he tallied nine points and had seven rebounds in the loss. In addition to Tankins, sophomore forward
Nigel Wilcox (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) and junior guard
Josh Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) each had eight points and junior guard
Jordan Clay (St. Louis, Mo./Blackburn College) had seven points for the game.
Saturday's game was close early on as Wilcox scored the first two points of the game and sophomore guard
Elijah Macias (San Antonio, Texas/Medina Valley) gave WU its last lead of the game on a basket with 15:15 left in the opening half. Macias' basket capped a 6-0 run by the Gorloks and gave WU a 10-9 lead.
The Wasps, though, would respond as they used a 12-1 run to push out to a 21-11 lead just 10 minutes into the contest. Johnson, who came into the game averaging 23.0 points per game, stopped EHC's run with a lay-up at the 9:11 mark, but EHC came right back and used a 16-4 scoring flurry to push its leas to 20 at 37-17 with 2:34 left in the opening half.
Webster, who closes the first half on a 7-4 run to cut the Wasps lead to 41-24 at the half, opened the second half with baskets from Clay and Johnson to pull within 13 at 41-28 with 18:44 left in game. That would ba as close as the Gorloks would get as EHC answered with a 21-13 run to push its lead to 21 at 62-41 with just a shade under 11 minutes left in the game.
EHC's lead would eventually balloon to 30 points at 81-51 following a 3-pointer by Anthony Williams. Freshman forward
Michael Suiter (Bernie, Mo./Bernie) and sophmore
Rodson Etienne (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach) would hit score baskets to pull within 81-55, before Dylan Felty capped EHC's scoring with a trey to set the final margin.
Alic Winn paced four Wasps in double figures with 20 points and he added 15 rebounds. In addition, Daniel Spencer had 19 points and eight boards, while Tharon Suggas had 12 points and Colin Molden chipped in with 10 points and six assists.
EHC held a 44-37 edge on the glass and forced the Gorloks into 18 turnovers that led to 21 points for the Wasps. WU forced 12 turnovers and blocked three shots, all of which came from Wilcox, who has now recorded 63 career blocks, which is fifth on the school's career list.
The two 3-pointers hit by the Gorloks were the fewest made treys in a game this season and the fewest since hitting two in last year's regular season finale at Greenville.
Webster shot 36 percent from the field and 11 percent from the 3-point line and both teams shot 15 free throws for the game as WU was 11-for-15 at the line and EHC was 13-for-15 from the line.
17 of the 19 Gorloks that suited up on Saturday saw action in the game, including seven Gorloks that made their season debuts. The Gorloks that saw their first action of the season were Suiter, sophomore guard
Lance Hatten (Greenacres, Fla./Berean Christian), freshman guard
Patler Levasseur (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm Beach), freshman guard
Isaiah King (St. Louis, Mo./Brentwood), sophomore guard/forward
Marvin Saintolien (North Miami, Fla./North Miami), sophomore forward
Nathan Hall (Greeneville, Tenn./South Greene) and freshman forward
Nate Dillinger (Bernie, Mo./Bernie). Those seven combined for five points and played a total of 21 minutes.
