WEBSTER GROVES - Two games into her collegiate career, Webster University freshman
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) has already found herself into the school's women's basketball record book as she pulled down 16 rebounds and added 16 points to pace the Gorloks to its 63-44 win Saturday afternoon over Concordia (Chicago) in the final game of the 2018-19 Webster Tip-Off Classic at Grant Gymnasium.
Beussink's 16 rebounds is tied for fifth most in a game in school history and the most rebounds by a Gorlok in a game since Courtney Pursley pulled down 16 boards against Eureka College on Feb. 22, 2014. The school record for rebounds in a game is 22, which was set by Debi Eydman against Principia College on Feb. 3, 1994.
With her performance, Beussink, who collected 10 of WU's 19 offensive rebounds for the game, was named the MVP of the Webster Tip-Off Classic, while she joined on the All-Tournament Team by Webster junior guard
Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers), who had eight points in Saturday's win and averaged 13.5 points per game in WU's two wins.
Webster improved to 2-0 on the season and has now opened the season 2-0 for the third consecutive year and the fourth time in the last six seasons. In addition, the Gorloks improved to 11-6 all-time in the eight year history of the Webster Tip-Off Classic and has won six straight games in the event since since falling 56-46 to Aurora in 2015. Concordia (Chicago) fell to 1-2 on the season as they fell 60-44 on Friday to Spalding, before Saturday's setback to Webster.
Much like Friday's season opening 79-58 win over Belhaven, the middle two periods is where Webster took control as they outscored the Cougars, 38-19 in the second and third periods to hold a 61-34 lead heading into the final period.
In the opening 10 minutes of the game, Webster led 23-15 as the two teams combined to shoot 12-for-35 (34.2 percent) from the field, but both teams combined to shoot 16 free throws as 15 fouls were called in the first period. CUC was 7-for-12 at the line, while WU was 4-for-4.
Webster opened the second period on a 12-4 run to jump out to a 16 point lead at 35-19 following a lay-up by freshman forward
Taylor Zarr (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville). The Cougars, though, would use lay-ups from Annika Rae and Sarah Ludwig to drop WU's lead to 35-23 at the half. In period, neither team shoot the ball well as WU shot 36 percent (5-for-14) from the floor, including going 0-for-4 from downtown, while CUC shot 23 percent (3-for-13) and was 0-for-3 from long distance.
The third quarter is where Webster began to exert itself offensive as they outscored the Cougars 26-11 in the period, including Beussink and freshman forward
Brylee Manes (Republic, Mo./Republic) combining for 11 points and eight of WU's 14 rebounds in the period. Beussink had six points and five boards and Manes tallied five points and three boards.
In the third period, the Cougars scored seven of the first nine points to pull within 37-30, but the Gorloks would answer with a 13-0 run capped by a lay-up by Manes to push out to a 50-30 lead. The run was keyed by four points apiece from Beussink and Manes. The lead would eventually grow to 27 points on two different times, the last time came following two free throws from sophomore guard
Kiara Rhines (Glendale, Ariz./Glendale) to give WU a 61-34 lead with 31 seconds left in the period.
Webster's lead would grow to 31 points in the opening 32 seconds of the fourth period following a lay-up by Morgan. Morgan's lay-up gave WU a 65-34 lead. From that point, CUC would outscore Webster, 10-8 over the final nine minutes of the period to seal WU's 29 point victory and extend its home court win streak to five consecutive wins dating to last season.
Sam Bloom paced the Cougars with 14 points, while Crystal Corr, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with eight points, including scoring six of those points in the final stanza.
Along with Beussink's 16 points and Morgan's eight points, Rhines and sophomore forward
Darieana Hunter (Norman, Okla./Norman) each also had eight points, while four other Gorloks finished with six points as WU had 10 of the 14 players that saw action in the game score at least two points.
The Gorloks finished the game with a 50-31 edge on the glass and forced CUC into 24 turnovers that led 18 points. WU scored 18 second chance points thanks to its 19 offensive rebounds. WU also had 20 assists and 18 steals in the win.
Webster shot 42 percent from the field, but was just 1-for-11 (9.1 percent) from the 3-point line for the game and also connected on 18 of its 24 free throws (75 percent). CUC was held to 27 percent shooting from the field and 16 percent (3-for-19) shooting from the 3-point line.
Through two games this season, Webster has allowed its opponents to shoot just 31 percent from the field and 16 percent from the 3-point line and has forced 53 turnovers and is averaging 16.0 steals per game.
Joining Beussink, Morgan and Corr on the Webster Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament Team was Spalding freshman center Hunter Wright, Spalding freshman guard Maleah Hirn and Belhaven senior guard AaLiyaha Thornton.
The Gorloks will now take a week off being returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 24 as they host Augustana (Ill.) College for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest at Grant Gymnasium.
