Women's Basketball Rebounds, Picks Up Home Win Sunday Over Lawrence

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Women's Basketball returned to the court less than 24 hours after its 27-point loss on Saturday at Spalding here Sunday afternoon as the Gorloks rebounded from Saturday's setback with a 66-53 non-conference victory over Lawrence University at Grant Gymnasium.

With the win, Webster improves to 7-3 on the season and snaps its season high two game losing skid, while Lawrence falls to 4-6 overall on the season.

In Sunday afternoon's matinee, the Gorloks jumped in front 9-0 in the opening two-plus minutes and never trailed in the contest against the Vikings, who are members of the Midwest Conference. Webster won all four periods and scored 14 or more points in all four periods. The victory extended Webster home court win streak to two straight games and moved its home record to 4-1 on the season.

The 9-0 start to the game proved to be one of the biggest differences in the game as Lawrence would outscore the Gorloks, 14-9, over the final seven minutes of the opening period to put itself back into the game as WU led just 18-14 at the first period.

During the opening run by the Gorloks, Webster forced six turnovers and held the Vikings without a shot and scored all nine of the points off of turnovers.

Freshman forward Donyell Harris (West Palm Beach, Fla./Lake Worth) got the scoring started with two free throws just 38 seconds into the contest. Harris, who made her first career start, finished the game with a career-high seven points in 18 minutes of action.

After Harris' two free throws, Johnson and Harris each scored on lay-ups to give WU a 6-0 lead with 8:40 left in the opening period. Redshirt sophomore forward Kaylee Heggemann (Washington, Mo./Three Rivers CC) hit 1-of-2 free throws with 7:46 left to make it 7-0 and junior guard Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) scored on a lay-up with 7:32 to give the Gorloks a 9-0 lead.

Kenya Earl would get the Vikings on the board with two free throws with 7:21 left on the opening period. The Gorloks, though, would use back-to-back lay-ups from Morgan and sophomore guard Kiara Rhines (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) to push its lead to 13-2. LU would respond with a 10-3 run to drop WU's lead to 16-12.

Heggemann, who finished the period with five of Webster's 18 points and tallied a career high tying 13 points in the win, added two more free throws with 33 seconds left to give Webster an 18-12 edge. Maggie Gallagher completed the period's scoring on a lay-up with 13 seconds left to give Webster its 18-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

In addition to Heggeman's 13 points, freshman forward Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) led the way offensively for Webster with 14 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double and fifth double-double of the season. The third double digit scorer for Webster was freshman guard Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville), who scored 12 points, pulled down six rebounds and collected a career-high five steals.

Beussink and Cottrell helped lead Webster to a 34-13 edge in points off the bench in the win. The 34 bench points were the fourth most scored this season by the Gorloks.

In the second period, Webster outscored the Vikings, 14-10 to hold a 32-24 lead at the half.

Cottrell scored eight of her 12 points in the third period as the Gorloks outscored LU 20-18 to go into the final period holding a  52-42 lead.

Webster opened the fourth period by scoring six of the first eight points to push its lead to 58-44 thanks to a lay-up by Cottrell. The Vikings, though, answered with a 7-2 run to pull within 60-51 with 5:55 remaining in the game. The Gorlloks would come right back and put the game out of reach thanks to back-to-back baskets from Heggemann and Rhines to push the Gorloks lead to 64-51 with 3:39 remaining.

The two teams would combine to score just a total of four points over the final three-plus minutes of the game to seal Webster's win.

Leah Reeves led the way for the Vikings with 14 points, while Earl finished with 13 points and five boards.

For the game, Webster shot 48 percent from the field, but was just 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) from the 3-point line. Over its last three games, Webster has made just six of its 27 three-point attempts (22.2 percent).

On defense, the Gorloks held Lawrence to 34 percent shooting from the field and the Vikings went 0-for-7 from downtown.

The Gorloks held a 39-27 edge on the glass as along with Beussink recording 10 rebounds, Rhines pulled down a career high eight boards.

Webster struggled at the free throw for the second consecutive game on Sunday as the Gorloks went 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) at the line against Lawrence after going 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) at the line on Saturday against Spalding. Lawrence finished shooting 72 percent (23-for-32) at the line.

Both team each had 25 turnovers, but Webster held a 23-16 edge in points of turnovers and collected 18 steals as four Gorloks tallied at least three steals in the game.

Webster will now take 13 days off for first semester final exams and the holidays before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 29 with a 1 p.m. non-conference game against St. Mary's College of Indiana. That game will mark the final non-conference game of the season for the Gorloks.
