LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Webster University Women's Basketball couldn't overcome a slow start and a season high 31 turnovers here Saturday afternoon as the Gorloks fell 83-74 to Covenant College in a nonconference contest at the Barnes PE Center.
Saturday's game came less than 24 hours after the Gorloks extended its win streak to four consecutive games thanks to its 87-48 win in Gallatin, Tenn., against Welch College. With Saturday's setback, Webster falls to 6-2 on the season and Covenant improves to 2-6 on the year.
Webster trailed 24-17 after the opening period and in fact never held a lead in the game as the Scots held off a fourth period rally by the Gorloks by hitting 15 of 16 free throws, including going 6-for-6 at the line in the final two minutes of the contest to earn the win.
"We had too many turnovers and they (Covenant) just flat out outplayed us today," Webster head coach
Jordan Olufson said following the game. "We have to be ready to battle each time out and today we weren't. This is a big learning experience for us."
The Scots, who are a member of the NCAA Division III USA South Conference, scored 30 points off of Webster's 31 turnovers, including 16 points off of 17 Gorlok turnovers in the first half to hold a 38-32 lead at the half.

Jaysea Morgan (Fisk, Mo./Twin Rivers) and freshman forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) paced Webster's offense with 11 points apiece, while sophomore guard
Naomi Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Greenville University) added 10 points in the loss.
In addition to Morgan, Beussink and Johnson, freshman forward
Taylor Zarr (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) added nine points and six boards, while sophomore forward
Darieana Hunter (Norman, Okla./Norman) chipped in with eight points.
Covenant scored the game's first points on a 3-pointer by Bekah Walter and led 11-2 just four minutes into game. The Gorloks, though, would respond with a 10-2 run to pull within 13-12 following a lay-up by Morgan. The Scots would answer by scoring nine straight points to extend its lead to 22-12 with 1:22 left in the opening period. The Gorloks would score five of the final seven points in the period to give Covenant a 24-17 lead.
The Gorloks would open the second period on 5-2 run to pull within 26-22. The Scots answered with a 12-8 run to push its lead to 38-30 with 1:43 left in the period. Zarr would hit two free thows with 35 seconds left to drop Webster's deficit to 38-32 at the half.
Covenant would outscore the Gorloks, 22-18 in the third period to hold a 60-50 lead heading into the final period. In the period, the Scots shot 53 percent from the field and 67 percent from the 3-point line.
Trailing by 10 heading into the final period, the Gorloks would score six of the first eight points in the period to pull within 62-56 with 8:49 left in the game. The run was capped by a lay-up from Johnson. Covenant, though, came right back and used a 7-0 run to push its lead to 69-56 with 6:23 remaining.
After a three-pointer from freshman guard
Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) and a free throw by Zarr moved WU within nine at 69-60, the Scots would score six of the next 10 points to push its lead to 75-64 with 3:19 left in the game.
Webster would make one final push as they answered Covenant's run with a 10-4 run to drop the Scots lead to 79-74 with 24 seconds left. WU's run began with a free throw by Johnson and was capped by a lay-up from freshman guard
Caity Jones (West Plains, Mo./Thayer). The Scots would hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final 20 seconds to cap its win.
Joanna Smith paced the Scots with a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Taylor Robinson added 13 points and Kaley Hallmark had 12 points. The fourth double-digit scorer for the Scots was Raquel Rosa, who scored 10 points off the bench.
The Gorloks were outrebounded, 41-33 as Beussink led the way with nine boards for Webster.
Webster shot 44 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line, while Covenant shot 46 percent from the field and 46 percent from long distance.
While Webster committed 31 turnovers, Covenant had 30 turnovers in the game that led to 24 points for the Gorloks. Webster also recorded 21 steals in the game, including five from Morgan. Morgan added seven assists for the Gorloks on the day.
The teams combined to shoot 48 free throws for the game as Webster was 15-for-22 (68.2 percent) at the line and Covenant was 21-for-26 (80.9 percent) at the line.
Webster will return to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic action next Saturday, Dec. 15 as they travel to Louisville, Ky., for a 12 p.m. game against Spalding.
