HILTON HEAD, S.C.— This past Friday, Webster University headed to Hilton Head, S.C., for their annual spring break trip. Their first match was Monday afternoon against Marietta College and the Gorloks started their trip out strong posting a 7-2 win at Carolina Place.
With the win, Webster improves to 2-2 on the season, while Marietta falls to 1-6 on the year.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, senior
Monica Behrle (Atlanta, Ga./East Paulding) and
Madison Watts (Rogersville, Mo./Logan Rogersville) won their third straight doubles match of the spring with a commanding 8-1 victory over Marietta's top team of Latrice Nelson and Victoria Xie.
Senior Jesse Steffens-Wills (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and junior
Sara Rice (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) at No. 2 doubles played a tough match. They were originally down 5-1 but battled back. Despite their efforts, they ultimately fell 9-7 to Katie Kitchen and Erin Warvell.
The Loks jumped ahead 2-1 with a win at No. 3 doubles. At the No. 3 spot, senior
Robin Bolme (Smyrna, Tenn./Blackman) and freshman
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) took control of their match and won handedly, 8-3 over Destiny Grim and Reagan Haas.
The victories continued into singles, with the Gorloks winning 5 of the 6 matches. Instead of playing the typical best two-out-of-three sets, the teams played the first to 8 games, like in doubles.
There were two particularly memorable matches from the day. The first was the win at No. 6 singles as Freshman
Adri Ventimiglia (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette Catholic) won her first career collegiate singles match 9-7 over Marietta's Liz Reed.
The second memorable match came at No. 1 singles as Behrle, who tied the Webster University women's tennis record for most singles wins with 58, broke the record with her 8-1 win over Victorie Xie. The previous record of 58 singles wins was held by Alison Tungate (2009-12).
Behrle now has the most singles wins in school history and with the spring season still young she will continue to distance herself from the previous record and make her mark in the school's record books.
After setting the school record, Behrle was reflective about her tennis philosophy that helped her succeed.
"My ultimate goal is always to improve," Behrle said. "If you want something, go for it. Focus on your game and not your opponents."
The Gorloks will continue their spring break trip by playing Stockton University on Tuesday, March 13, at 10 a.m. EDT at the Shipyard Racquet Club in Hilton Head.
