HILTON HEAD, S.C.— Webster University Women's Tennis continued their spring break trip here Tuesday with an afternoon match against Stockton University. The Gorloks won their previous meeting with Stockton and were looking for another repeat performance. On Tuesday, they made that a reality with an 8-1 win over the Ospreys.
With Tuesday's win, the Gorloks improve to 3-2 overall on the season and 2-0 on its spring break trip.
All 3 doubles teams won their matches. At No. 1, senior
Monica Behrle (Atlanta, Ga./East Paulding) and junior
Madison Watts (Rogersville, Mo./Logan Rogersville) continued to dominate together, winning their match 8-1.
Senior
Jesse Steffens-Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and junior
Sara Rice (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour) also won easily at No. 2, their score 8-4.
At No. 3 doubles, freshman
Maggie Federhofer (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and senior
Robin Bolme (Smyrna, Tn./Blackman) had an exciting comeback in their match. Originally down 7-4, they rallied back and forced a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, they won 7-5 against Amanda El-Khouri and Taylor Searles.
The Gorloks continued to win in singles, snagging wins in 5 of their 6 matches. After a loss the day before against Marietta, No. 3 Steffens-Willis bounced back and hit strongly in her 6-1, 6-3 win over Emily Steinberg.
At No. 4, Rice struggled at points during her match as she won the first set 6-4 but was then down 5-1 in the second set. She focused on one game at a time and managed to tie it back up. She and Stockton's Katelyn Emick went into a tiebreaker for the second set, which Rice won, 7-1.
Another win came from freshman
Adri Ventimiglia (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette Catholic) as she moved up to play No. 5 singles in place of Federhofer and rose to the occasion as she posted a win by scores of 6-3, 6-4.
Stockton's only win in the match came at No. 6 singles as Searles picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bolme.
"We played very smart and consistent today," Webster head women's tennis coach
Martha Davis-Goldstein said following Tuesday's win. "I am very pleased with our movement and focus on court. Overall, I'm happy with our energy this week, and I look forward to it continuing throughout the week."
Webster will play its third match in Hilton Head on Wednesday, March 14 as they face College of Wooster at 10 a,m. EDT at the Hilton Head Motorcoach Resort.
