KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Webster University concluded play here Tuesday afternoon in the Diamond 9 Sunkissed Games by splitting its final two games of the spring break event at Fortune Road Field.
The Gorloks opened the day with a 2-1 setback to Springfield College and then earned a 4-2 win in its finale against Oswego (N.Y.) State University. With the split, Webster improves its record to 5-7 overall on the season and they finish the Diamond 9 Sunkissed Games with a 4-4 record.
In the two games on Tuesday, Webster finished with 12 hits, including four hits and three runs scored by sophomore shortstop
Taylor White (St. Charles, Mo./Lutheran St. Charles), while senior catcher
Terri Dearth (Lemont, Ill./Southwestern Illinois) added two hits and three RBIs.
Along with its offense receiving 12 hits, Webster also got two strong pitching performances from seniors
Morgan Mansur (Decatur, Ill./Lincoln Land CC) and
Chelsea Thornley (Clinton, Mo./Clinton). Those two each pitched a complete game as Mansur (3-3) earned the win against Oswego State and allowed nine hit and two runs, while walking two and fanning three, while Thornley (1-4) took the loss against Springfield as she allowed eight hits and two runs (two earned runs) and didn't walk nor strike out a batter.
For the eight games in Florida, Webster scored 42 runs, recorded 64 hits and committed 26 errors that led to 18 unearned runs.
Against Springfield (6-0) in Tuesday's first game, all the scoring came in the first inning as Springfield used four hits, including an RBI triple and an RBI single to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead.
The Gorloks would get in the scoring action in the bottom of the first as White led off with a bunt single, stole second and scored on an RBI double down the right field line by Dearth.
Springfield would have a scoring chance in the fourth as they loaded the bases thanks to single and two Gorlok errors, but Thornley would keep Pride off the scoreboard as Carianna Gasdia was called out on batter's interference to end the inning.
The Gorloks wasted a lead off double in the bottom of the fourth by sophomore centerfielder
Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) as Springfield's Shelby Allen would retire the next three Gorloks in order to leave Burroughs stranded at second.
Over the final three innings of the game, both teams would combine to four runners on base, but none of those runners would reach scoring position.
Allen (3-0) earned the win in the circle for the Pride as she allowed five hits and one run, while walking none and fanning 10.
Springfield recorded eight hits in the win as Allie Wheeler led the way with two hits, while White had two of WU's five hits.
Meanwhile in the nightcap, Webster jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the first inning thanks to a 2-run double by senior designated player
Katlyn Garza (O'Fallon, Mo./Ft. Zumwalt North). Garza's double brought home White, who led off the game with a single and stole second and Burroughs, who drew a two-out walk. The Gorloks would then add another walk to Mansur, but Oswego State's Angela Frampton struck out junior third baseman
Brienna Sheperd (Central Point, Ore./College of the Redwoods) to end the inning.
The score would remain 2-0 until the seventh inning when the Gorloks used two Oswego State errors and a triple by Dearth to score to two unearned runs and take a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Lakers used three hits, including back-to-back RBIs on a triple by Erin Sweeney and a single by Jessica Roe to plate two runs, but Mansur would retire the next two Laker hitters in order to seal the Gorloks win.
Webster finished the seven hits in the nightcap as White and Garza each had two hits in the win.
Oswego State (3-3) finished with nine hits as Sweeney and Roe, the top two hitters in the Lakers order, combined to go 4-for-8 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
Oswego State committed two errors, while Webster didn't commit an error in the game.
Frampton (2-1) took the loss in the circle as she tossed all seven innings and allowed seven hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out six and walking six.
The Gorloks will now take eight days off before returning to action on Wednesday, March 21 as they open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. in Greenville, Ill., against Greenville University.
