HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Webster men tennis team seems to like playing tennis here in South Carolina as the Gorloks won its three straight match in the Spring Tennis Fest here Tuesday afternoon as they posted a 9-0 shutout victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College at Carolina Place.
With the win, Webster improves to 3-1 on the season, while Wisconsin Lutheran falls to 0-9. In addition, Tuesday's win also the second by the Gorloks over WLC in Hilton Head as they earned an 8-1 win over WLC on Sunday.
In Tuesday's match, the Gorloks dropped just one set and won two matches by default.
Webster began Tuesday's match by winning all three doubles matches, including earning a win at the No. 3 spot by default. The Gorloks won the other two doubles matches by identical 8-1 scores.
In singles play, the Gorloks won by default at the No. 6 spot, while junior
Charles McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) needed a third set tiebreaker to earn a win at the No. 2 spot. McGhee opened with a 6-4 win, before dropping the second set, 6-3 and then earned a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker.
Webster won the other four singles matches in straight sets as sophomore
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), who was this week's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year, won 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot over Ben Wordell, while freshman
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell) earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot over Matt Plaski and freshman
Courtland Butler (St. Louis, Mo./McKinley) picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot over Jake Brandt.
The Gorloks other singles win at the No. 4 spot was by identical 6-0 scores as freshman
Zach Bliss (Branson, Mo./Branson) defeated Grant Fleming.
Webster will conclude its spring break trip in Hilton Head on Wednesday, March 14 as they face Illinois Wesleyan in a 10 a.m. EDT match at Carolina Place.
