WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University men's tennis team wrapped up its regular season here Tuesday evening by falling 8-1 in non-conference action to Missouri Baptist at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.
Tuesday's match, though technically not Webster's final regular season match, it was the Gorloks final countable contest as the Gorloks host Concordia Seminary in an exhibition match at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18.
With Tuesday's setback, Webster's record is now 7-6 on the season, while Missouri Baptist improves to 4-7.
In Tuesday's match, Missouri Baptist won all three doubles matches as Webster won just three games as Missouri Baptist won by 8-1, 8-0 and 8-2 scores at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles respectively.
Meanwhile, in the singles, the Gorloks only win in the match was picked up by freshman
Zach Bliss (Branson, Mo./Branson) at the No. 5 spot as Bliss picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Seth Grady. The win by Bliss was his ninth singles win of the season, including improving to 7-4 at the No. 5 spot.
Two of the more competitive matches are Tuesday came from sophomore
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) and freshman
Nicolas Andrade (Quito, Ecuador/Francis Howell) at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles spots.
At the No. 1 spot, Muren faced Lucas Lobao and the two battled point-for-point in the first set as Lobao would eventually earn a hard-fought 7-5 win and then posted a 6-3 win in the second set, while at the No. 6 spot, Andrade won the first set (6-4) against Colton Albers, before falling 6-2 in the second set and then suffering a hard-fought 10-8 loss in the third set tiebreaker.
In the other three singles matches, the Gorloks managed to win a total of 13 games, including junior Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) falling 6-2, 6-4 to Drew Davis at the No. 4 singles spot.
Following Wednesday's exhibition match with Concordia Seminary, No. 3 seeded Webster will face No. 2 seeded Greenville University in the first round of the 2018 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Friday, April 20 at 11 a.m. at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.
